Penn Badgley Opens up About ‘Bittersweet’ Series Finale of ‘You’: ‘It’s a Satisfying Ending’

The series finale of “You” is currently streaming on streaming on Netflix, and Penn Badgley opened up about the ending of his five-season run as the serial killer Joe Goldberg. (Warning: Spoiler alerts).

“I’ve grown with Joe, kind of like on my back, gnawing at my neck,” he joked to ET. “In some ways, I feel like I’ve learned a lot from him, you know, how not to be.”

Badgley continued, “I don’t mean the obvious things, like killing, murdering, and manipulating. I mean the more subtle things like where desire intersects with love and makes us become possessive and act in ways that are not actually loving.”

“It is bittersweet. Much sweeter than it is bitter, but nonetheless,” he quipped.

Of the ending, which has Goldberg spending his life in prison, the “Gossip Girl” star told ET, “I think it’s a satisfying ending. I’m not easily satisfied. I think it’s a very satisfying ending.”

Badgley Shares Why ‘You’ Had to End

“You” ended on a high note after season 5, and as much as fans might have wanted more, Badgley thinks the series had to come to a close.

“It’s truly hard for any show, no matter if it’s been on for five, six, seven seasons, it’s hard to land any plane like that. And this one with this kind of protagonist is especially difficult and important to stick to the landing because of what a true villain he is, ” Badgley told Blavity TV on April 24.

Badgley continued, “I think I always trusted that it would end well. I think I always trusted that it would end well. The writers, they outdo themselves every season.”

Badgley is Looking Forward to Playing New Characters

Badgley has played Goldberg in “You” for six years, and he’s finally ready to let him go. “I’m glad we’re putting him to bed,” he told USA Today.

“I’ve been with (Joe) my entire 30s, actually. I was 30 years old when I signed on to do this. I’m going to be 39 later this year,” the actor said.

On playing Goldberg, Badgley reflected, “He’s been like my little convict brother, who I’ve had to counsel through our 30s together. And in that way, he’s kind of taught me to be a better man. He’s failing miserably, but I’ve had to reflect on all the things I share with him, even if they’re not that escalated or that magnified.”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Badgley shared, “That night [after wrapping] I drove all the way out to Long Island [to spend two weeks at the beach with family]. I think I sat in a long silence. It was certainly surreal. It was a better part of my 30s — in a few months, I’ll be 39; it defines an era for me.”
