Pete Davidson Shares the Valuable Life Advice Eddie Murphy Gave Him

Pete Davidson got some friendship advice from his “The Pickup” co-star, Eddie Murphy, while filming the comedy movie.

“I’ve been guilty of having 700 friends in the green room. People I just met or are just in the crew, and then I’m like, ‘Why did they not have my best interest in mind?’” Davidson told People on August 9.

Speaking on Murphy’s entourage, Davidson said, “He has a really small crew, and it’s the same people for a really long time, and I think that’s really important to have an efficient career and just overall life in this business.”

He added, “You have to be able to trust who’s around you, and you got to be able to move a certain type of way.”

Davidson shared that he learned a valuable lesson from watching Murphy’s moves, which spurred him to pare down his circle.

“Pretty much after that movie, I was like, ‘Okay, I have three friends. Here’s who they are. Here’s who I have to trust and share things with,’” the “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” actor said.

Davidson is expecting his first baby with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt, and he shared the non-advice Murphy gave him.

“It’s weird. Everybody that I’ve talked to that’s a dad, you know, puts their arm around me. They’re like, ‘Hey, let me, you know,’” Davidson said on an August 7 episode of “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”

He continued, “Eddie was like, ‘I got no advice for you.’ He goes, ‘You’re on your own.’”

The “SNL” alum also shared how surprised he was to star in a movie with Murphy. “I just was like, ‘Are they sure? Who dropped out?’ But yeah, I kept it really cool.”

Davidson revealed to People that the director allowed him to ease into his scenes with Murphy, so he filmed with Keke Palmer first.

When he eventually met Murphy, Davidson was ready to take on his role. “By the time we got into the truck, we were super tight. If I was just in a truck alone with him day one, I would’ve probably lost my [expletive] mind. But it was gradual, and it was eased in.”

“Then by the time we were in that truck for two to three months, [I was] just screaming. I was just screaming at my hero. But we got on real fast and we had a really, really good time,” Davidson said.

He added, “We were like little girls, we could not stop laughing.”
