Hollywood star Renée Zellweger has unveiled a brand new statue in honor of her iconic character Bridget Jones. During the ceremony, the actor opened up about how proud she is of her work on the film series and the fact that the âadorableâ statue may well outshine herself.
Renée Zellweger Pokes Fun At New Statue
The statue was created to celebrate the titular character from the âBridget Jones’s Diaryâ franchise almost 25 years after she first appeared on the big screen. Located at London’s Leicester Square, the statue shows Jones in her younger years clutching her diary while wearing a short skirt and jacket.
Speaking in an interview with BBC News during the event, Zellweger was asked about her thoughts on the statue itself. She was evidently pleased with the end result, calling the statue âadorableâ before adding, âI think she’s much cuter than me.”
She then went on to say that the lasting appeal of Jones as a character is that she is such a relatable personality. “[It’s her] vulnerability, her humanness,” she said. “We recognise ourselves in her, we recognise ourselves in her struggles.
“It makes it OK for the rest of us to be authentically who we are. Imperfect.”
Those sentiments were echoed by writer Helen Fielding, the creator of the novel series and a screenwriter of the film franchise. She said, “I think to have the comfort of seeing a character that you can relate to, because they are real and human and emotionally honest, it’s like having the friend you can be honest with.â
The Future of âBridget Jonesâ
âBridget Jonesâs Diaryâ released in 2001 and was followed up with a sequel three years later in the form of âBridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.â More than a decade later, âBridget Jones’s Babyâ arrived in cinemas in 2016 and the fourth and currently final film in the series is the 2025 title âBridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.â Both Hugh Grant and Colin Firth returned to reprise their roles.
While there are currently no plans for a fifth entry, that doesnât mean it is completely off the cards. Zellweger has spoken about her desire to continue the story. In fact, both Zellweger and director Michael Morris are open to returning in the future.
âMy understanding was that this was kind of it, but I keep my fingers crossed that she might want to share some more of her own experiences through the world of Bridget,â Zellweger said.
âMe too,â said Morris in response. âAnd look who weâve got: Chiwetel Ejiofor in the world now, and weâve got Leo Woodall in the world now. Weâve got all these fantastic people and Helenâs got her life, her kids are going to college. Letâs hope for more chapters.â
