Pima County Sheriff’s Former Boss Suggests New Theory in Nancy Guthrie Case

The kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie has become one of the major stories of 2026. With the case now into its ninth week, there is still no sign of the 84-year-old since her disappearance or any clue as to who is responsible for taking the victim from her home in Tucson, Arizona.

In fact, there is not even a clear motivation behind the crime. Early on in the first few weeks of the investigation, ransom notes were sent to various news agencies. However, it wasn’t ever clear if these were genuine or fake. Now, former law enforcement agent Rick Kastigar has suggested a new theory about what has happened to Nancy Guthrie.

Former Pima County Sheriff Boss Believes Nancy Guthrie Has Likely Passed Away

Rick Kastigar, who was once the boss of current Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, has suggested a new theory about the Nancy Guthrie case and what he believes may have happened to the victim.

Speaking in an interview with Brian Entin on a YouTube video, Kastigar gave his grim thoughts on the fate of Nancy Guthrie following her kidnapping. During the discussion, the retired law enforcement agent explained that he believes that the victim has likely died following her abduction — although this may not have been the intention of the suspects.

His theory is that those involved in taking Nancy Guthrie from her home had the intention of keeping her alive with medical help but this effort failed. This is why he believes that no more ransoms have been issued, as the suspects no longer have any leverage in which to demand payment.

“What would prevent an individual who had planned this out—to the level that I think he did—from going into Mexico and harboring her someplace in Mexico where, theoretically, they could deal with her medical issues,” Kastigar said. “I believe that she passed somehow, that she died somehow, while that plan may have been attempted. And I believe that negated their opportunity to get what they wanted from the family. A lot of us think it’s money—and that very well may be.”

“My theory is that she’s passed. My theory is that they have nothing—they being the perpetrators—really have nothing with which to bargain any further and what they may have done with her, I don’t know,” he added.

Former Sheriff Kurt Dabb Says Suspect Had Help From Accomplices

In an interview with RadarOnline.com, former Pima County sheriff Kurt Dabb revealed that he believes the suspect in the investigation would likely have had help from multiple accomplices.

“I believe there are anywhere between two to four accomplices,” Dabb said. “The logistics of something of this magnitude is too much for one person to handle, in my professional opinion, based on the facts as I know them right now.”

Dabb explained that the amount of work to plan and carry out the crime would almost certainly be too much for a single person.

He added, “It’s more than likely the home was canvassed prior, either by the kidnapper himself or an accomplice. Whether or not they knew a camera was there was a culmination of their reconnoiter.”
