PS5 fans troll Sony over whether its new headsets are digital or not

Not even the announcement of a new pair of wireless PlayStation 5 headsets are safe from snide comments about Sony’s recent business decisions.

Ever since they announced they’re abandoning physical games after 2027, Sony hasn’t been able to say a thing online without inviting angry comments on social media.

It hasn’t helped that its most recent exclusive, Marvel’s Wolverine, has come under more scrutiny than expected (it’s one of the lowest rated first party Sony games of the generation) and Sony incited further outrage by cancelling Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear successor Physint.

Even after announcing new wireless headsets for the PlayStation 5, the responses are mostly complaints about Sony’s recent actions, although this time people also have criticisms about the company’s track record with previous headphones.

Sony unveiled the PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge wireless headsets via the PlayStation Blog. No pricing has been shared, but the Pulse headset will launch in time for Christmas, while the Pulse Edge will be available in early 2027.

As for what makes these headsets better than the previous ones, Sony says they have larger planar magnetic drivers, ‘creating fuller, deeper bass, while keeping the clean sounds players have enjoyed’ from the previous Pulse Elite headset.

In addition, they support PlayStation Link, which lets you seamlessly switch between compatible devices and ‘AI-enhanced noise rejection’ to help filter out background noise when chatting with friends.

Although there are no prices, the Pulse Edge will undoubtedly be more expensive since it comes with extra features, such as active noise control, a detachable boom mic, and a carrying case. So somewhere north of £90.

We’re surprised Sony even still allows comments on the PlayStation Blog, since most fans are just using them to complain about the physical games thing.

‘Some physical games beyond 2028 and you’re golden,’ writes Gurranq.

‘What about cancelling all digital you greedy pigs?’ adds unusuallullaby00.

‘Surprised these headsets aren’t digital. Physical games forever,’ says statefan02.

The most recent comment by flatthumbz is just a rundown of every controversial thing Sony has done in the last several years, including shutting down Japan Studio and the disastrous launch of Concord.

Some people have commented on the actual headsets and expressed some interest, but there are plenty who’ve taken the opportunity to bash previous hardware.

‘My experience is that the headset you release with the PlayStation branding are brittle and saves cost by using plastic where other headsets uses more durable materials [sic],’ claims troubled1. ‘Given Sony’s latest decisions, I would not be surprised that this will be another moneygrab with no concern for quality.’

‘Are these gonna snap and break like literally every headset since the PlayStation 3? I’ve only ever bought the official headsets for a decade+ now and it amazes me how every single one breaks and snaps at the headband for the price I’m paying,’ says ReptileHand.

‘Sony has an awful track record of supporting its hardware components. Immediately dropped the PSVR2. They don’t deserve support,’ says Rehjul.

The complaints aren’t exclusive to the PlayStation Blog. Sony’s announcement of the headsets on X has only attracted the same kind of replies, with more than a few snidely asking if the headsets will be digital or physical purchases.
