Race Across the World fans have pointed out a potentially game-changing error by contestants Brian and Melvyn.

The brothers—a 62-year-old retired financial adviser and a 65-year-old driving instructor—have joined the fifth season of the popular BBC reality series in an attempt to beat four other couples in a 14,000-kilometre race from China through Nepal all the way to India.

All our teams are provided with to survive the gruelling, and hopefully transformative, journey is a money belt, a GPS tracker and a map with none of the modern-day travel luxuries we are all too used to, like pre-booked accommodation and mobile phones.

Although most teams have come prepped with their game faces on and Duke of Edinburgh-style rucksacks strapped to their backs, not everyone got the memo.

As such, viewers have shared their dismay after spotting Melvyn lugging a suitcase with wheels to the starting point on the Great Wall of China overlooking the village of Huanhuacheng in northern Beijing.

‘Are they planning on running about with their suitcase?’ lynsey asked on X.

‘Dragging that suitcase is gonna be a nightmare’ Vicky added.

‘Is one of the brothers gonna drag a suitcase from China to India?’ Louise King rightly questioned.

‘Why’s he’s got a pull suitcase,’ Daniel White echoed.

‘A large suitcase…. What was he thinking??’ @nordiclaura exclaimed.

‘Why…..why on earth would you bring a full sized suitcase on wheels on this?’ Jon J Marley echoed.

‘That suitcase on wheels needs to go,’ Jimmy Duggan declared.

‘Guaranteed that suitcase will be the first victim on Race Across The World,’ Jillywill predicted.

‘That wheelie suitcase is going to cause a lot of problems,’ notsocaroline agreed.

‘Are these older gents going to lug a suitcase around the whole journey???’ daxfromsomerset said.

‘That wheelie suitcase is going to annoy me for the whole race,’ Adam Barrett posted.

Despite their questionable packing decisions, the dynamic duo have won over many people’s hearts with their sightseeing tendencies and the shoddy state of their accommodation, which would make a bog look enticing.

‘Just want to protect Brian & Melvyn already. They are naturally funny and look like they are having a good time. Plenty of sightseeing I just hope they don’t let that get too much in the way of the actual race,’ ryansoapking25 reflected.

‘Brian & Melvyn are my winners already. Give them the cheque, the pair of cute little legends!’ Krisconvrey shared.

Brian and Melvyn are joined by former married couple turned best friends, Gaz and Yin, sisters Elizabeth and Letitia, young couple Fin and Sioned and mother-son duo, Caroline and Tom as they race to reach the finish line, Kanniyakumari, the southernmost tip of India, in the fastest time.

During the premiere episode of the Bafta-winning series, Fin was praised for opening up about his incurable health condition, type one diabetes.

He explained that he felt ‘insecure and embarrassed’ about the condition which he diagnosed with when he was 11 but has found brilliant support in his girlfriend.

As for who will win, and whether Melvyn’s suitcase will make it to the end of the show, remains to be seen.

Race Across the World airs every Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.
