Rapper Rod Wave, best known for songs including Street Runner and Heart On Ice, was arrested on the day he received his first ever Grammy nomination.
Born Rodarius Marcell Green, the 27-year-old American rapper, singer, and songwriter was taken into custody by the Atlanta Police Department on four charges on Friday November 7, having been nominated for a Grammy in the best song written for visual media category for Sinners, the title track from the horror film of the same name.
The four charges included possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime, possession of a controlled substance, and reckless driving, according to TMZ.
A spokesperson for the Milton Police Department told the Daily Mail authorities responded to ‘a possible domestic disturbance’ at a local residence.
Upon arriving, officials determined the incident involved ‘a previously unreported burglary and the subsequent discharge of a firearm’.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
He reportedly turned himself in, and People reports Green was released from police custody on Saturday November 8.
Wave’s attorneys, Drew Findling, Marissa Goldberg and Zack Findling, said the rapper ‘was unjustly profiled and unlawfully arrested in Atlanta’.
‘The arresting officer belongs to the Atlanta Police Department’s controversial Crime Suppression Unit — a group known for its aggressive tactics and emphasis on high arrest numbers rather than genuine public safety,’ they added.
They said the arrest was made because of the unit’s ‘quota-driven approach’ and that they looked forward to clearing ‘violations of [his] rights in court’.
Drew Findling told TMZ that his client had already made his first court appearance and was released on a bond of $8,000 (£6,079).
This isn’t Green’s first jail time this year, as he was arrested and charged with 14 counts including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm and felony tampering with evidence in May.
The musician was detained in Fulton County, Georgia and released on a $50,000 (£37,000) bond.
The arrest was connected to an incident that took place on April 21 when the rapper ‘returned to his home following a burglary’, reported Variety at the time.
‘At his residence, an argument ensued, and a pistol was fired 14 times, striking several cars and a wall in the home.’
In a statement provided to Variety at the time, Green’s attorney Drew Findling said: ‘There is no truth to these charges [against his client]. Rod Green was a victim of a burglary and committed no crimes. How he was even charged as a result of this situation is incomprehensible. This will absolutely be resolved favourably to Mr. Green.’
Green had previously been arrested for possession of ammunition or a weapon in Florida in April 2024 after police suspected he’d been involved in a gang-related shooting that left four injured.
In 2022, he was also arrested and charged with battery by strangulation in the same state after being accused of choking an ex-girlfriend while their two children were inside the home.
The case was not prosecuted, as the charge was later dismissed, with his lawyer calling the incident a ‘misunderstanding’.
Green is reported to be the 21st highest-grossing touring rapper of all time, earning $36 million from 31 shows.
He first rose to fame in 2019 with his single Heart on Ice, which went viral on TikTok before peaking at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.
His debut studio album Ghetto Gospel then went on to peak at number ten on the US Billboard 200. In the five years since he’s released a further five albums, the most recent being 2024’s Last Lap.
That release debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, marking his seventh consecutive top 10 album, and making him the only male artist to release a top ten album each year from 2019 to 2024.
