On Thursday, December 18, the tragic news of NASCAR legend Greg Biffle‘s plane crash was reported. The crash, which occurred on their way to Florida for a birthday celebration, claimed the lives of seven people, including Biffle, his wife Cristina Grossu Biffle, their son Ryder, and Biffleâs daughter Emma, whom he shared with ex-wife Nicole Lunders, People reports.
As details emerge about what happened, Grossuâs mom, Cathy, has also spoken out.
The Final Heartbreaking MessageÂ
Cathy shared her grief in an interview with People, including a heartbreaking detail about what her daughter said to her before her passing. “We’re in trouble,” Cathy said of Grossuâs message moments before the crash. “She texted me from the plane, and she said, ‘We’re in trouble.’ And that was it. So we’re devastated. We’re brokenhearted.”
Cathy also discussed how the family had been on their way to Florida. “To think that they would be killed on a birthday trip, that was just such a fun time for the family,” she said. “And to see the horrific way that it ended, it’s just, it is so hard to bear. I cannot believe they’re gone.”
She had seen them days before, and although Cathy could not recall their conversations, she remembered she and the family hugged each other goodbye. It was a happy moment, and one she will likely replay in her head for many years to come. Despite not being able to recall their exact conversations, Cathy does know âthey were happy.âÂ
Remembering NASCAR Legend Greg Biffle & His Family
Cathy praised her daughter for her acts of selflessness. She revealed that her final act would be to bring joy to others. Cristina would be sending Santa letters to families.Â
“She said, ‘Mom, can you go pick up the last 17 letters that are at Staples? I want to get them in the mail before I get on the plane tomorrow,’” Cathy recalled her daughter saying ahead of her trip. “So I ran over and got ’em and took them to their house, and when they got home last night, she put them in envelopes and finished them all up to get them off to those last 17 families to bring joy to them, and that would be the last thing that she would’ve done.”
Tributes for the family have been pouring in, including one from NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Jeff Gordon. âDevastating news. I had such tremendous respect for Greg as a driver, and we shared countless tough battles on the track,â Gordon wrote on X. âLike so many others, I was inspired by his tireless relief work during Hurricane Helene. My heart goes out to the Biffle family and everyone hurting.â
