The two worked together on the 1991 movie, âWildflower,â which Keaton directed. Witherspoon played one of the lead roles, taking on the character of Ellie Perkins.
âShe just really took a chance on me,â Witherspoon recalled in her interview, Parade reports. âYou never forget those people who give you your first job opportunities.â Witherspoon also affectionately referred to Keaton as being âlike an auntieâ to her and praised her for being âtruly original.â
This is not the first time that Witherpoon has shared what Keaton meant to her. However, her new comments do highlight the tremendous impact that Keaton had on her life. Despite having an incredible career herself, Witherpoon is grateful for how she was treated as a young star.

On October 12, the day after Keatonâs death was announced, Witherspoon posted a video on Instagram of herself speaking about the âSomethingâs Gotta Giveâ actress. She addressed her death and how it impacted her. Witherspoon referred to Keaton as one of her âfirst mentors in this businessâ and recalled how, when she was 15, she interviewed for a role in Keatonâs movie and how kind she was to her.
Witherspoon praised Keaton for being âincredible and indelible and just truly an original person.â In her speech, she also encouraged the audience to watch one of Keatonâs films and be inspired by her unique outfits to live as their most authentic and interesting selves. âDiane Keaton changed the way we all saw women on screen – smart, funny, stylish, and completely original,” she wrote in the caption. “Iâm so grateful to have had her as a mentor.â
At the time of he post, Witherspoon’s words were celebrated by fans and fellow celebrities. Kerry Washington reacted to the post, writing, âLove this. And you.â Candace Cameron Bure also reacted. âLoved hearing this story. Thank you for sharing it,â she wrote.
