Pretty Woman’s Richard Gere, 76, has been seen with his arms around Diana Silvers, 28, as they film their new film Asymmetry.

Production is continuing in New York as the two actors get cosy for their age-gap romance based on the acclaimed book by Lisa Halliday with the same name.

Following an unexpected romance between two people who are at very different stages in their lives, many drew comparisons with Halliday’s own connection to author Philip Roth, who was 45 years her senior when they dated.

Barack Obama named it one of his favourite books of 2018, and now it’s being made into a film.

But after seeing the two actors, with a 48 year age gap, getting cosy on the streets of the The Big Apple, some film fans aren’t happy.

Some, like @danameyerson and @jeseniagrams called it ‘gross’.

The video showed Gere and Silvers getting up close and personal as he leant in for a kiss from the Booksmart star.

@Msjudithgeorge wrote: ‘I like Richard Gere. But the age difference is exhausting.’

Others like @gabbydlgarza agreed they liked the American Gigolo lead, but admitted: ‘I’m so [s]ick of all the old man and young woman propaganda. give me a rom com with a much older woman and a younger man.’

The film is directed by Oscar-winner Edward Zwick, who is also one of the writers, with Halliday and Marshall Herskovitz.

Producing are Zwick and Herskovitz of the Bedford Falls company, as well as Clay Pecorin of Rainmaker Films and FilmNation Entertainment – the latter two are co-financing.

The synopsis on FilmNation reads as follows: ‘Asymmetry tells the story of a young editorial assistant in New York, Alice (Silvers), who comes upon world-renowned 70-year-old author Ezra (Gere) in Central Park one day.

‘Their one moment of eye contact sparks a connection that leads them both down a life-changing rabbit hole, where they create a private world just for two.

‘Ezra, famous for his audacious work, finds someone with whom he can be openly vulnerable, and Alice finds the courage to explore her own aspirations as a writer. Until it is all put at risk when their secret relationship is exposed.’

Talking about turning her work into a movie, Halliday said: ‘It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with Ed and Marshall on transposing Alice and Ezra’s story for the screen.

‘I am enormously grateful to them for their humor, ingenuity, courage, compassion, and dedication.’
