Reading Time: 3 minutes

As you’ve no doubt heard by now, Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer were murdered in their Brentwood home on Sunday.

Very little is known about the murders or the circumstances leading up to them, but police say there was no sign of forced entry, and the Reiners appeared to have had their throats slit.

Their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with their deaths. And now, we have new information about the troubled relationship between the 32-year-old and his parents.

Friends witness clash between Nick and Rob just hours before murder, sources claim

According to a new report from TMZ, Nick and his parents attended a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien on Saturday night.

Other guests were reportedly shocked when Nick engaged his usually mild-mannered father in a “very loud argument” in the middle of the party.

The nature of the argument remains unclear, but less than 24 hours later, Rob and Michele were dead, and Nick is currently the only suspect in their murders.

A long history of family strife

Friends say that Rob and Michele frequently confided that they were distraught over Nick’s struggles with mental health and substance abuse issues.

“We’ve tried everything,” Michele reportedly remarked to a friend recently (per TMZ).

The couple’s efforts extended to helping Nick tell his story through film.

The 2015 film Being Charlie — co-written by Nick and directed by Rob — was based on Nick’s experiences as a homeless heroin addict.

“It’s not my life. [But] I went to a lot of these places, so I had a lot of these stories,” Nick told People magazine in a 2016 interview about the film.

“I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas,” he said at the time.

“I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.”

The second son of Rob and Michele, Nick Reiner, was born September 14, 1993.

According to a report from Parade magazine, he entered rehab for the first time not long after his 15th birthday.

In a recent interview with Piers Morgan, Reiner was asked to choose a favorite from his massive filmography.

“Well, I mean, listen, people have their favorites. [It’s] the cliché, ‘We love all our children, even the bad ones,’” the director quipped. He ultimately chose the coming-of-age classic Stand By Me as his favorite.

We will have further updates on this developing story as new information becomes available.
