On Monday, December 29, Sally Struthers was seen in public for the first time since the shocking December 14 murders of her “All in the Family” costar Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Struthers, who played Gloria Stivic on the beloved CBS sitcom, was featured in a TMZ report looking solemn as she stepped out in a black ensemble. She wore black boots, black leggings, and a long skirt and blouse. The only hints of color in her outfit were a few touches of burgundy that accented the ends of her sleeves, and some red and gold accents on the front of her blouse. She clutched a tiny black handbag, and her voluminous golden hair flowed freely around her shoulders.
The sighting comes two days after the Reiners’ daughter, Romy, was spotted spending time by a beach on her birthday.
The Reiners’ oldest son, Jake, was also seen in public recently. He was photographed shopping with his girlfriend, Maria Gilfillan, on December 27.
Sally Struthers Previously Called the Loss of Rob Reiner ‘Devastating’
Shortly after Reiner’s murder, Struthers gave a short statement to Deadline. In it, she said, “There are no words. This is beyond devastating and my heart is with their family.”

In an interview prior to Reiner’s death, Struthers revealed his ex-wife Penny Marshall, to whom he was married from 1971 to 1981, also auditioned for the role of Gloria. Struthers even said she was expecting to be beaten out for the part by the “Calendar Girl” actress.
Struthers recalled in the interview that she once told the show’s producer, Norman Lear, during a coffee break, “Norman, remember when I auditioned for this, and it was down to the last four, and one of them was Penny Marshall? And we had to go in and do improvisations with Rob?”
She said Lear replied, “Yeah? What are you getting at?” To which Struthers responded, “Well, I really thought that Penny would get it. Cause Rob was part of each audition, and he was living with her and soon to marry her. He would obviously do better with her, wanting her to get the job.”
Struthers says she then questioned, “Was I really the funniest one in the room when we were doing the improvs for all the suits?” She says Lear admitted, “Well, no. We just started thinking, you know, if the show is a hit and audiences start to really like it and we have some longevity, do we want the daughter to be her mother’s daughter? Or do we want her to be daddy’s little girl?”
Struthers says Lear told her she was ultimately chosen because production believed they would “get more humor out of the relationship between father and daughter.”
