Sarah Paulson grew emotional as she remembered her âdear friendâ Diane Keaton during a red carpet appearance in Los Angeles. The âAmerican Horror Storyâ actress, 50, attended the premiere of Huluâs new legal drama âAllâs Fairâ on Thursday, October 16, where she reunited with co-star Kim Kardashian and the showâs cast. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Paulson briefly reflected on Keatonâs death, calling it a heartbreaking loss.
âI was incredibly close to her, and this is a profoundly sad time for me,â Paulson said. âI canât talk about it in any way thatâs articulate other than to say that for all you knew and loved about her as a performer, she was even more as a friend.â
‘She Was Even More Spectacular as a Human Being’
Paulson grew emotional again during an interview with Access Hollywood when asked about Keatonâs lasting legacy.
âShe was a very dear friend of mine. Uh, so itâs not something Iâm able to talk about yet,â Paulson said, her voice trembling. âAll I can say, and I have been saying tonight, which is important to me to communicate, is that what you thought she was as a performer, she was even more spectacular as a human being.â
Fighting tears, Paulson added, âI was the luckiest person in the world to have had her in my life the way that I did.â
Their Friendship Spanned Decades
Paulson and Keatonâs friendship began more than two decades ago when they worked together on the 1999 film âThe Other Sister.â From that moment on, their bond only grew stronger. The two often spoke fondly of each other over the years, celebrating not just their shared history but their deep mutual admiration.
Just last month, Paulson reflected on their long friendship in a resurfaced InStyle interview. âShe played my mother in a movie in my first sort of studio movie,â she recalled. âIt was a really thrilling experience and she was the most generous, just playful, fun, alive performer and really taught me the power of beats in a scene. And I was so scared, and she really took me under her wing and weâve been really good friends ever since.â
Paulson went on to describe Keaton as âa filmmaker as well, a fashion icon, and an absolute iconoclast,â adding softly, âI feel very lucky to call her a dear friend.â
Remembering Diane Keatonâs Legacy
Keaton died on Saturday, October 11, at age 79, after suffering from bacterial pneumonia. Her family confirmed her passing in a statement to People on Wednesday, October 15.
âThe Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,â the statement read.
âShe loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.â
A death certificate obtained by People listed Keatonâs cause of death as primary bacterial pneumonia and noted that the Oscar-winning actress was cremated on Tuesday, October 14.
As Paulson and countless fans continue to mourn her loss, Diane Keatonâs warmth, humor, and fearless individuality will continue to shine through the lives she touched, both on and off screen.
