A critically acclaimed sci-fi series from Paramount Plus is going to be available to stream in full for free from Sunday night on ITVX.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, devised by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet, is the 11th Star Trek series to have been on TV.

The series, which began in 2022, is a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery, which ran between 2017 and 2024, and follows the crew of the Starship Enterprise.

Set in the 23rd century, the series actually takes place more than 100 years before the events of The Next Generation, which starred Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard.

And it takes place roughly 15 years before the events of the very original Star Trek series from the 1960s, starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

Strange New Worlds seasons one to three, each containing 10 episodes, will be available to stream in full from Sunday, October 19 on ITVX.

The cast includes Anson Mount, who stars as the ship’s captain Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck as a younger Spock, and Jess Bush as Christine Chapel.

Strange New Worlds follows the crew of the Starship Enterprise as they explore new worlds and planets and carry out vital missions throughout the galaxy.

Most of the show’s episodes revolve around a ‘case of the week’ format, in which the Starship Enterprise crew are involved with a new adventure each time.

The series currently has a rating of 8.3 out of 10 on IMDb, based on 72,000 user ratings, and it boasts a Rotten Tomatoes average of 97% across three seasons.

Some fans have been more critical of the third season, with user ratings for each individual episode hitting a lower average than seasons one and two, but the show remains popular.

@ChrisMantonUK said of the series on YouTube: ‘Cool starships flying around in space, discovering weird alien stuff, using futuristic technologies and having epic space battles. Feels like this may be just the ticket.’

@WGM6772 commented: ‘Everything about this series looks amazing, from the cast to the visuals! It really has the original series feel to it but with a modern update. Very excited to see it!’

Some fans have argued that the perceived downturn in quality may have been due to the writers’ strike, which affected production on numerous TV shows in 2023.

Writing for Metro, Chris Connor called Strange New Worlds the perfect place to jump into the Star Trek franchise, even if you’re not a Trekkie yourself.

‘For anyone wanting to dip a toe into Star Trek’s deep space exploration, this is where you should start… After launching on Paramount Plus in 2022, it has been one of the best-received in the franchise in some time.’

Also writing for Metro, Mike Rampton advised fans to avoid thinking too much about Star Trek lore and timelines and simply enjoy the ride.

‘It’s all terrific fun, upbeat and colourful, a refreshing throwback after Discovery’s heavily serialised storytelling and Picard’s bleakness.’

Watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on ITVX from October 19.
