Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs will receive his prison sentence this week, and his mom, Janice Combs, is hoping he avoids spending too much time behind bars. While Combs’ former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, hopes to see a lengthier sentence, his mother asked the judge to have mercy. She acknowledged that he has made “mistakes,” but doesn’t want to see him suffer too greatly.

In a letter to U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, Janice asked him to “have mercy” on her son in his sentencing. In July, a jury convicted Combs on charges of transportation to engage in prostitution. They acquitted him on the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

“Unfortunately, my son has made some terrible mistakes in his life,” she wrote in her letter (per <a href=”https://www.eonline.com/news/1422920/sean-diddy-combs-mom-on-his-mistakes-prison-sentence” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>E! News), “which I know he recognizes.”

She said that while she doesn’t excuse his actions, she hopes to see him out of prison as soon as possible.

“I will never excuse any wrong doing committed by Sean,” she wrote, adding, “I was always very strict with him growing up. I appeal to the kindness of your heart to allow my son to be able to sit at a dinner table with his family. To allow him to raise his children and to instill in them the need to be respectful, get an education and just be God’s children with love in their hearts.”

She requested that the judge consider Combs’ children. According to her, they have faced “pain and sleepless nights” since his arrest. She also pointed to her health as a reason to give him a lighter sentence.

“I don’t know how much longer I will be around,” she wrote, “but I would love to be able to see him and his children together again.”

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ mom has defended him since his arrest

Combs’ mother has ardently supported him since his arrest in 2024. Shortly after his arrest, she said that the allegations against him were “lies.”

“My son may not have been entirely truthful about certain things, such as denying he has ever gotten violent with an ex-girlfriend when the hotel’s surveillance showed otherwise,” she said, per the <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c206z9ggp9yo” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>BBC. “Sometimes, the truth and a lie become so closely intertwined that it becomes terrifying to admit one part of the story, especially when that truth is outside the norm or is too complicated to be believed. This is why I believe my son’s civil legal team opted to settle the ex-girlfriend’s lawsuit instead of contesting it until the end, resulting in a ricochet effect as the federal government used this decision against my son by interpreting it as an admission of guilt.”

She attended the trial in order to support him.

Though Janice pushed for a lighter sentence in her letter to the judge, Ventura wants to see him spend more time behind bars.

“As much progress as I have made in recovering from his abuse, I remain very much afraid of what he is capable of and the malice he undoubtedly harbors towards me for having the bravery to tell the truth,” she wrote in her letter to the judge (per <a href=”https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/sean-diddy-combs-sentencing-cassie-ventura-letter-1235437995/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Rolling Stone).

She said she hopes Combs faces “justice and accountability.”

“For over a decade, Sean Combs made me feel powerless and unimportant, but my experience was real, horrific, and deserves to be considered,” she wrote. “While the jury did not seem to understand or believe that I engaged in freak-offs because of the force and coercion the defendant used against me, I know that is the truth, and his sentence should reflect the reality of the evidence and my lived experience as a victim.”

The defense wants Combs to spend no more than 14 months in prison. The prosecution has pushed for a sentence of over 11 years.
