Argentine singer and model Fede Dorcaz has been shot dead ahead of his appearance on the Mexican version of Strictly Come Dancing.

The 29-year-old was killed in what locals described as an attempted robbery on Thursday night in Mexico City after he left rehearsals to drive home.

Fede was due to appear – with his girlfriend, Mariana Avila – on Las Estrellas Bailan En Hoy, which in English means ‘Stars Dance Today’ and has been described as the Mexican equivalent of Strictly.

A tribute on the show’s official Instagram account said: ‘The HOY family mourns the sad passing of our friend and colleague, Fede Dorcaz.

‘We share in the grief felt by his entire family, his parents and his girlfriend, Mariana Avila.

‘Mariana and Fede were one of the couples scheduled to appear in the new season of Las Estrellas Bailan en Hoy.

‘Fede leaves a huge void in our team. His memory and his passion will continue to inspire us forever. Rest in peace, Fede Dorcaz.’

Described by Rolling Stone as a ‘rising Latin star ready to redefine global Latin pop’, Fede was born in Mar del Plata on Argentina’s Atlantic coast, and he had been living in Mexico for the past two years.

The Mexico City Secretariat of Public Safety said Fede was attacked as he tried to tried to exit a ring road. He died instantly after being shot in the neck.

A spokesman said: “Video surveillance cameras in the area are being analysed to identify the likely perpetrators who, according to initial reports, were travelling on two motorcycles.”
