Sir Anthony Hopkins has left fans baffled as he celebrated England’s win at the Men’s World Cup, looking utterly unrecognisable.

It wasn’t just that the Welsh-born star was rocking the Three Lions on his chest, Sir Anthony appeared much leaner and sported a beard.

The 88-year-old actor was sat down as he hugged his wife Stella Arroyave, 70, who was in a green Mexico shirt and cap.

‘We’re all winners… #WorldCup2026,’ he captioned the post after the game, which saw England knock out one of the host nations, 3-2.

Fans couldn’t get over how different he looked, as well as roasting the Silence of the Lambs legend for being a ‘turncoat’.

Sir Anthony was born in Margam, not far from Swansea and Bridgend in South Wales but has lived in California for several years.

‘What are you doing????? You are Welsh 😭,’ commented Susi on the post, as Declan Mulligan wrote: ‘Thought you were a proud Welsh man.’

‘Babes ur welsh x,’ chimed in Lauren, although with Scotland out and Wales not qualifying, Sir Anthony has likely just opted for his nearest home nation.

Meanwhile, Stella is also not from Mexico and was instead born in Colombia, who are also competing in the tournament.

The team beat Ghana on Friday and are set to face off against Switzerland tonight (Tuesday, July 7).

The Elephant Man actor is fairly active on social media but didn’t share any more details on the World Cup battle from inside his house.

Fans can assume he didn’t indulge in any drinks, though, as the actor has been sober for over 50 years after being involved in a drink-driving incident.

On a fateful night in 1975, he quit drinking and never looked back, after realising he was ‘in big, big trouble’ and ‘driving a car drunk out of [his] skull.’

The acclaimed star, who began his career on stage with Laurence Olivier, said in a video two years ago he had ‘more fun’ since quitting ‘than ever.’

Since becoming sober, Sir Anthony has starred in the likes of A Bridge Too Far (1977), and 1980’s The Elephant Man.

His best-known role as Dr Hannibal Lecter in 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs landed him two Academy Awards; Best Actor and Best Picture.

In 2020, he became the oldest actor to receive an Oscar for Best Actor after his critically acclaimed role in The Father.

Speaking about his online popularity, he told People: ‘I’m slightly reluctant. I say, “Oh no, not again.” But I do something silly because we need humour. We need a laugh in life.

‘For good reason I guess, life is tough. The world is a savage place but life does have its beauty.’

The esteemed actor often shares positive videos, such as returning home to Wales for Christmas or short clips of him playing piano for his family.

He’s still incredibly active, with seven films currently listed on his IMDb as upcoming or in post-production, including a biopic on the Maserati family, starring Al Pacino.
