Sky News has issued an on-air apology after a presenter compared an Israeli MP’s comments about Gaza to the Holocaust.

In the three months since Israel declared war on Hamas on October 7, when around 1,200 civilians were killed and 250 taken hostage, more than 26,000 people have died in the Gaza Strip, according to The Associated Press on Friday.

The Hamas-ruled health ministry in Gaza have said that 26,083 people have been killed and 64,487 Palestinians wounded after Israel launched retaliatory attacks.

On Friday, the International Court of Justice stopped short of ordering a ceasefire in Gaza in a genocide case filed by South Africa.

However, it did adopt measures to protect Palestinians in Gaza, including ruling that Israel must do it all it can to prevent genocide, and that basic aid to people in Gaza is urgently needed.

During a heated debate on Sky News the same day, broadcaster Belle Donati drew comparisons between former Israeli ambassador to the UN Danny Danon’s comments about the migration of Palestinians from Gaza to the Holocaust.

Donati raised an opinion article Danon wrote in November, titled ‘The West Should Welcome Gaza Refugees’, and said, as Danon continued to talk over her: ‘You’ve called for a voluntary migration of Palestinians from Gaza.

‘In November you co-authored a piece that appeared in the Wall Street Journal. You suggested the ethnic cleansing of some of Gaza’s population to Western countries that would accept the refugees.

‘The exact quote from that article: “One idea is for countries around the world to accept limited numbers of Gazan families who have expressed a desire to relocate.” Do you stand by those statements?’

After continually interrupting her, Danon said: ‘Ethnic cleansing is a word you used. If you read my article, I spoke about voluntary migration.’

He went on: ‘I think anyone, voluntary [being] the word, who wants to move to another country should be eligible to do that, but you quote, it’s not the first time you’ve used those allegations…’

Donati then said: ‘The sort of voluntary relocation of many Jewish people during the Holocaust, I imagine. It is not voluntary relocation.’

Before she could finish, Danon erupted saying: ‘Shame on your for that comparison.

‘That is a shameful antisemitic equation. I will not allow you to speak about the Holocaust and compare [that’s] to what’s happening today… Israel will defend ourselves.

‘This is pure antisemitism what you just said, comparing the Holocaust to what’s happening today in Gaza.’

As he repeated ‘Shame on you’, Donati could be heard saying: ‘You talked about eradicating Hamas.’

‘You should apologise for what you just said on the record about the Holocaust,’ Danon interrupted.

Sky News later did issue an apology, saying: ‘In an interview earlier today with Israeli politician Danny Danon a Sky News presenter made a comparison between Mr Danon’s comments on Israel’s war with Hamas and the treatment of Jewish people in the Holocaust.

‘Sky News recognises the complete inappropriateness of this comparison and the offensive nature of those comments.

‘Sky News would like to apologise unreservedly for the comparison and to Mr Danon personally for making the comparison.’
