Sonic The Hedgehog is being re-released on cartridge but there’s a big problem

Sonic Frontiers on the Nintendo Switch 2
Gotta go fast on the Switch 2 (Sega)

Sega has revealed two new collections for classic Sonic games, as Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition comes to Switch 2

Sonic The Hedgehog celebrates its 35th anniversary this month, and Sega marked the occasion with a special livestream.

During the stream, several new Sonic-related announcements were made, the first of which had been leaked countless times already: Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2.

This definitive edition boasts improved graphics and performance over the original Switch version, and comes with all previously released DLC, along with a digital art book and mini soundtrack. It’s available now digitally and as a physical Game-Key card.

If you already own Sonic Frontiers on Switch, the kicker is there’s no upgrade path to the Switch 2 version, so you’ll have to lay down £44.99 to get all the extras and improvements.

During the livestream, Sega also announced two physical Sonic game collections exclusively for Switch. There’s the Classic Sonic Collection, which bundles together Sonic Origins, Sonic Mania, and (weirdly) Sonic Superstars. The second is the Modern Sonic Collection, complete with Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Colours: Ultimate, and Sonic Forces

Both these bundles launch October 2026 and come with a Sonic 35th anniversary reversible coversheet and logo patch. A UK price is yet to be announced, but they’ll be $49.99 in the US, so they’ll likely be £44.99 over here.

The last Sonic announcement is a special re-release of the first two Sonic The Hedgehog games on the Mega Drive. Sonic The Hedgehog (35th Anniversary) – Legacy Cartridge Collection comes with a translucent cartridge shell, a colour instruction booklet with restored artwork, and a foldout foil box. If you prefer Sonic The Hedgehog 2, there’s a separate Legacy Cartridge Collection for the sequel too.

These are being sold by iam8bit for $99.99, with the first wave of orders set to ship in Q3 2026. While the website does ship to the UK (naturally at a higher cost), these cartridges are only compatible with NTSC Sega Genesis consoles, so unless you have a US system, they’re only collector’s item for UK Mega Drive owners.

Iam8bit has released similar legacy cartridges in the past, for titles like Street Fighter 2, Mega Man 2, Earthworm Jim, Disney’s Aladdin, and Disney’s The Lion King.

Amid all these Sonic announcements, not everything is hunky dory in the land of Sega. Recently, the company said both Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Shinobi: Art Of Vengeance fell below sales expectations, despite being well-received.

Meanwhile, Sonic Frontiers has sold 4.94 million copies since it launched in 2022. It’s the highest-selling 3D Sonic game ever, so a sequel is practically inevitable – although it sure seems to be taking its time.

The cartridges are very snazzy (Sega/iam8bit)
