A poorly timed X post has only got people even more angry about Sony bringing an end to physical games on PS5, as fans call Sony hypocrites.
The online outrage over Sony’s plans to stop releasing physical PlayStation games after 2027 has been going strong all month, with people still bombarding any and all PlayStation social media posts with angry comments.
Sony, for its part, is simply weathering the storm and allegedly telling employees not to discuss its physical game plans in public, although if it wants people to stop talking about them, it really shouldn’t be giving them such obvious ammunition.
Sony’s recently begun advertising a new vinyl record player, demonstrating that the company is more than happy to support physical media… just not on PlayStation.
The official Sony Electronics account on X posted a promotion for the LX3 Turntable over the weekend, which champions the importance of owning music on a physical vinyl disc, going so far as to say that’s how music is ‘meant to be heard.’
‘Rediscover the warmth, detail, and ritual of vinyl with the LX3 Turntable. Drop the needle, press play, and enjoy music the way it was meant to be heard,’ reads the post.

Obviously, different people are manning the Sony Electronics and PlayStation media accounts, but it’s still embarrassing timing and rings extremely hollow since Sony has shown it doesn’t really care about physical media at all.
As such, the replies are full of people gobsmacked at Sony’s hypocrisy, as well as confused over why they are happy to keep supporting vinyl over physical games, despite it being a more niche industry.
For comparison, vinyl sales made $1 billion (about £751 million) in the US in 2025 (per Variety), which is a lot of money but nowhere close to the reported $60.7 billion (about £45.6 billion) spent on video games (per the ESA).
‘Somebody tell the guys at PlayStation. Apparently, physical media is worth supporting even if it is a small niche. PS games are much bigger than vinyl. Yet for some reason, they feel the need to kill gaming culture for profit. Shame!’ reads the top reply by DoesItPlay1. That’s the same account that recently called for people to partake in a weeklong PlayStation boycott next month.
‘You see how vinyl has made a comeback and is selling like hotcakes, and you go and wipe out the physical format of video games. Hypocrites!’ says MiXMistery.
A few people have also shared the same edit of Diana from Capcom’s Pragmata holding up one of her drawings, except the drawing is replaced by a statement of how music and films continue to be sold on physical formats despite the rise of digital media and streaming, so there’s no reason for physical games to die out.
Ironically, Sony may see all this engagement as a positive, since this post has received more replies and reposts than anything the Sony Electronics account has shared all month.
Previous posts have only seen a small handful of replies, although all of those are just more complaints about physical games, showing that none of Sony’s social accounts are safe from the backlash.
This also happens to follow a PlayStation Network outage that occurred last Friday, which made it impossible for people to access some of their games. While the situation was resolved later that day, Sony never commented on the matter, not even with an explanation or apology.
Its complete silence outside of advertising its games is becoming more and more noticeable, but the company is unlikely to care unless it sees real financial repercussions.
