Another insider has suggested Sony will not delay the PS6 beyond its expected 2027 launch, despite the ongoing memory shortage crisis.
We’ve already seen the RAM shortage delay Valve’s Steam Machine, but there’s a big question around whether it will impact the next consoles from Sony and Microsoft.
Sony hasn’t announced a release date (or even a window) for the PlayStation 6, but based on previous console cycles, it’s expected to launch sometime in 2027. However, with the memory shortage causing hardware prices to skyrocket, some analysts believe Sony’s next console could be delayed to 2028 or 2029.
YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead has already pushed back against these reports, stating that contracts are in place to manufacture the console’s chip, which would be more costly to terminate than the extra price incurred by inflated RAM costs.
Now, another tech insider, KeplerL2, has implied that a delay is not happening. In a thread on NeoGaf, about an Embracer Group financial report which suggests the PlayStation 6 could be delayed to 2028 or 2029, the insider posted the classic ‘nope’ GIF of Danny DeVito from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
While he doesn’t provide a reason for the GIF, KeplerL2 reportedly liked a post by user Bojji, who wrote: ‘Delaying the console when it’s basically done doesn’t make any sense, they have TSMC contracts for production of APUs, maybe even GDDR7 contracts with memory makers, [research and development] done that costed them few hundred millions…

‘PS5 sales are slowing down and there is no guarantee that memory prices will drop between now and 2030.’
KeplerL2 previously refuted the idea of a potential delay in April this year, stating that AMD would not ‘waste resources doing validation on something they think will get delayed’.
While Sony could delay its next console for all kinds of reasons, both KeplerL2 and Moore’s Law Is Dead have been accurate in the past when it comes to tech leaks, and are the best sources when it comes to console hardware.
If Sony’s PlayStation 6 does launch in 2027, the big question is whether there’s any appetite for a brand new console – and how much it will cost. Sony recently bumped up the price of the PlayStation 5 by £90 to £519.99, so any successor is going to cost significantly more than that.
