Sports Power Couple Announces Amicable Split After 10 Years Together

Megan Rapinoe, Sue Bird

Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird took to social media on Friday, April 17, to announce that they have decided to separate after 10 years together.

“There really is no smooth or easy way to share this news,” the statement began. “After a lot of thought, we’ve decided to separate as a couple.”

“This hasn’t been an easy decision, but it’s one we’ve made together, with so much love, respect, and care for each other,” they continued. “We’ve shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something we’ll always carry with us.”

Rapinoe, who played for the United States women’s soccer team, and Bird, who retired from the WNBA after the 2022 season, went on to add that they are “so grateful for the incredible community that has held us up, welcomed us in, and supported us exactly as we are.

“So many of you have reminded us, again and again, why loving out loud matters,” the couple wrote, also speaking about how they will no longer be doing their shared podcast. “Thank you for being with us through all of it… It means the world to us.”

Support Pours In For Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe

Under the statement on social media, many people left comments, showing support for both Rapinoe and Bird.

“Love you both. ❤️❤️,” actress Caterina Scorsone posted.

“❤️❤️ sending you both all the love,” former USWNT member Julie Foudy commented.

“Always had a huge amount of respect for both of you as individuals and as a couple. That won’t ever change ❤️,” one person wrote.

“NOOOOOOO OMG 💔 love the respect you have for each other 😢,” another person said.

“Wishing all the best for both Megan and Sue, hoping you find space for healing and love again,” someone shared.

Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe Got Engaged In 2020

Bird and Rapinoe got together in 2016 while both were competing for Team USA at the Rio Summer Olympics. The two continued to be each other’s biggest fans publicly, and in 2020, they officially got engaged.

Bird shared a photo on Instagram with no caption, but the photo showed Rapinoe down on one knee, putting a ring on the WNBA legend’s finger.

In an interview with PEOPLE in 2022, Bird even teased the couple’s wedding, saying that they were talking about ideas.

“Ironically, this is like I said, honestly, stars aligning seems to be the theme,” she said. “We’re kind of toying with having a wedding in Mexico maybe. So there’ll definitely be Coronas on deck, I can count on that for sure. But we also talked about what we wanted the attire to be. I think basically what you said, we would want people to come as themselves more than anything. More than anything, I think for both me and Megan, that’s really important in our own lives. So we’d want that for our guests as well.”

However, the two never officially got married.
