Two years after Olivia Munn quietly began fighting breast cancer, sheâs now sharing that her mom, Kim, has also been diagnosed with the disease. In a raw and emotional Instagram post, Munn revealed that her mom is currently undergoing treatment for stage 1 breast cancer; and yep, itâs been a brutal few months.
Itâs Not Just Her Fight Anymore
âMy mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. You may know that when I talk about my own battle with cancer I bring up the Lifetime Risk Assessment test that saved my life. I never wouldâve predicted it would save my momâs life as well,â Munnâs Instagram caption says.
The actress, who only went public with her own diagnosis this year, said her momâs cancer was caught in January, not long after Munn herself underwent a double mastectomy following her 2023 BRCA1 gene results. Now, theyâre both in the thick of it, balancing recovery, grief, strength, and, somehow, a sense of humor.
âI can tell you this: going through cancer is really hard. But thereâs something about watching a loved one go through it that is even more heartbreaking.â If that doesnât punch you in the gut, just wait.
Kimâs Diagnosis Hit Fast â But Sheâs Still Smiling
Munn didnât hold back on what the last few months have looked like. Her post included photos of her mom recovering (peace sign up, snacks nearby, blanket wrapped around her) and still somehow finding ways to laugh. âShe has since completed 12 rounds of chemo and will continue monthly Herceptin transfusions until this fall,â Munn said.
And itâs not lost on anyone how fast everything turned. It seems like Kim went from being totally fine to being in the hospital. The emotional weight of it all is clearly still fresh, but so is the bond between them.
âI want to say how proud I am of my mom,â she added. âSheâs handled all of this with bravery and humor while still driving us crazy (just says after her double mastectomy she tried to do laundry and make dinner – sheâs insane.)â
Theyâve now been through something most of us canât imagine; twice. And still, they show up for each other.
Sheâs Using Her Voice to Urge Others to Pay Attention
Munnâs been vocal about how early detection saved her life, and now sheâs doubling down. She made it clear that her momâs cancer was caught early because they were proactive, and sheâs begging others not to wait.
âMy mom wanted me to tell you that she hopes by sharing her story it will help save someoneâs life,” Munn said. âWeâre taught about our periods, yearly Pap smears and mammograms at 40. And we now need every gynecologist to incorporate the lifetime risk rest into their care plan,â she told fans, especially those with a family history.
Itâs a reminder that staying quiet about your health (or thinking youâll just âdeal with it laterâ) isnât worth the risk. Munnâs not just sharing this to vent. Sheâs sharing it because she knows how easily it couldâve gone the other way.
The response from fans was immediate and full of love. Rightfully so. Olivia and Kim are both fighters⦠and now theyâre doing it side by side.
