Steam achievement leak reveals secret Twin Peaks and Alf games

Several unannounced video games have been revealed thanks to the massive Steam achievement leak, including a new Tetris and a Shrek remaster.

Earlier this morning, a large number of unreleased video games had their Steam achievements leaked, covering not just titles out this year but ones not due until 2027 or later.

This is bad news for story-focused games like Persona 6 and Kingdom Hearts 4, as the achievements contain major spoilers, which is bound to have serious repercussions for Valve.

On top of that, the leak has given away the existence of a handful of games that haven’t even been formally announced yet and some of them are very weird.

Twin Peaks video game

One of the two most surprising things to come out of the Steam leak is the existence of a Twin Peaks game. While the show has had a tremendous influence on video games, especially in Japan where it inspired everything from Deadly Premonition to The Legend Of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, it’s only ever seen one game adaptation – a VR puzzle game from 2019.

While this new mystery project lacks a name, one of the achievements is explicitly named ‘Welcome to Twin Peaks’ and is earned for reaching the Double R Diner.

Strangely, there’s only one other achievement that looks to be a placeholder (it’s just called ‘Test Achievement’), which suggests only some of the game’s data has been shared to Steam. Although, again, you have to wonder why any publisher is sharing this info with Valve so early in development.

There’s nothing to indicate what kind of game it is, which developer is working on it, or when it will come out, but the thought of another Twin Peaks video game is intriguing, nonetheless. Even if, obviously, the late, great David Lynch will not be involved.

Alf video game

If you thought Twin Peaks getting a new video game was weird, that’s nothing compared to this leak. We don’t know anyone who would be interested in a game based on a rubbish 80s sitcom, especially when it’s mostly remembered via memes and that one Simpsons jokes (‘He’s back. In pog form!’)

Looking at the achievements, it almost seems as if the Alf game is a parody, as there are only five and four of them are earned from simply pressing button inputs.

The last one is earned for getting all the other achievements and reads, ‘Your cats are safe now.’ So, maybe it’s a game where you don’t play as Alf but are trying to keep him away from eating cats?

There was an Alf game back in 1989 but for some reason it was only released on the Master System and only in North America, so we’d never heard of it before we just checked.

New Shrek video game

Shrek is making a cinematic comeback next year with Shrek 5 and it appears Dreamworks is wisely capitalising on that with a video game. Although looking at the achievements, it’s not a brand new video game but a re-release of the Shrek 2 tie-in game from 2004.

This is evident by the achievements directly referencing level names from the Shrek 2 game, as well as elements like Hero Time events and specific missions, such as protecting Cinderella while she’s shopping.

It sounds like a proper remaster too, as there’s mention of a photo mode that wasn’t in the original. That all seems very odd but we suppose it’s still less effort than making an actual new game. It’s unclear if original publisher Activision is involved, but if they are can we have Transformers: War For Cybertron remasters next, please?

Nickelodeon cosy game

You know how Disney Dreamlight Valley is just Animal Crossing but the villagers are all Disney characters? It sounds like Nickelodeon is planning its own version of the diea.

There’s no name for the game but accompanying images for the achievements clearly show Nickelodeon characters like Reptar from Rugrats and Mr Krabs from SpongeBob SquarePants. The achievement descriptions reference activities you’d expect to see in a life sim, including repairing cabins, crafting furniture, and catching fish.

New The Walking Dead game

We’re not sure what to make of this one as it doesn’t appear to be a new Walking Dead game but rather a re-release of Telltale’s The Walking Dead series.

There are 23 achievements that all reference events from Telltale’s games and include images of characters such as Clementine. However, a complete collection of the series is already available on Steam.

Our best guess is that this is an updated remaster of some kind, perhaps sporting reworked graphics in a similar vein to the upcoming remaster of Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us.

New Tetris game

Although it lacks a title, one of the achievements explicitly says ‘Perfect Clear the board using a Tetris’ so it’s unambiguous what this is related to.

This new Tetris otherwise sounds like a traditional version of the classic puzzle game, although the achievements mention customisable rulesets and a board editor. It’s going to have to do very well to be better than Tetris Effect though.

New Slime Rancher game

2017’s farming sim Slime Rancher has proved popular enough to see multiple ports to consoles and mobile, as well as land a movie adaptation, and it looks like it’s getting a spin-off soon.

There’s no name for it but the images for the achievements feature pixel art and their descriptions mention a ‘gachaclaw’ multiple times, so it sounds like this could be some free-to-play gacha game where you ‘pull’ for different slimes to collect.

Brawl Stars

We don’t know how much excitement there would be for a spin-off of Brawl Stars, but the mobile hero shooter from Clash Of Clans studio Supercell has been running for eight years so it must be very popular to outlast other live service games.

As with other examples, the leak doesn’t include the game’s name, but the achievements namedrop Buster, Fang, and Maisie, who are all characters from Brawl Stars.

There are mentions of combo counts and parries, which makes it sound like an action game, as well as running and surfing minigames. Maybe it’s some kind of action platformer, although since it’s a Brawl Stars spin-off, we’d expect it to have some live service elements, like microtransactions, especially as there’s talk of unlockable skins.

Something candy themed

We can’t quite pin down exactly what this game is meant to be but, based on achievement names like ‘Candy Tycoon’ and ‘Bull in a Candy Shop,’ this is certainly something confectionary related.

The immediate assumption is that this is another Candy Crush spin-off, perhaps a role-playing game of some kind, as the achievements mention boss fights. Maybe even a roguelike, as some achievements are earned by winning ‘runs’.

However, we’ve seen it suggested that this could be a new Scribblenauts game. This is based on the images associated with achievements for clearing ‘arcs’ with different characters. The characters do look reminiscent of the designs seen in the Scribblenauts games, so it could be.

This may be coincidental, though, as the achievements don’t mention anything about creating specific objects – a core feature of the Scribblenauts games – and it’d be weird for the series to suddenly resurface after eight years. Although developer 5th Cell is still going, so who knows.
