DC fans wonât have to wait much longer to bring âSupermanâ home. James Gunn has confirmed that the summer blockbuster is arriving early on premium digital platforms â including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home â on Friday, Aug. 15. The decision is designed to give viewers the chance to watch âSupermanâ before âPeacemakerâ Season 2 launches on Aug. 21 exclusively on HBO Max.
âSupermanâ serves as the official launch of Gunnâs new DC Universe, setting the stage for the interconnected stories to come. âPeacemakerâ is next in line, and Gunn has been clear in multiple interviews that the events of âSupermanâ directly tie into the John Cena-led series. Characters introduced in the film, such as Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), will appear in âPeacemakerâ Season 2.

According to Variety, Gunn addressed why âSupermanâ is heading to PVOD platforms just over a month after opening in theaters on July 11. âWell, itâs very complicated, but the truth is it is because of âPeacemaker,ââ Gunn said. âI originally thought âPeacemakerâ was going to be coming out next month. There were a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that âPeacemakerâ is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see âSupermanâ that wanted to, even those people who couldnât get to a theater before âPeacemaker.â And thatâs really the reason for it.â
While the early streaming date has sparked disappointment from some fans â especially considering âSupermanâ remains a theatrical draw â Gunn emphasized that the film will still be playing in theaters even after its digital debut.
