The end is nigh for Netflix’s fantastical series Sweet Tooth, as the streaming giant confirms that the show’s conclusion is coming in the near future.

Last month, the second season of the show was released, reuniting viewers with Gus (Christian Convery), a 10-year-old child who’s a hybrid of a human and a deer.

Having set out on a journey to find his mother, Gus ended up teaming up with Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), a nomad traveller who’s been nicknamed ‘Big Man’ by his companion.

Following the emotional ending of season two (which we won’t spoil just in case any readers haven’t had a chance to watch it yet), fans of the comic book-inspired show may be wondering what the future has in store for Sweet Tooth.

It has now been revealed that there is another season of the programme in the pipeline – but it will be the last.

Showrunner Jim Mickle opened up about bringing Gus’ story to a close, explaining that ‘in a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life’.

He continued to Netflix’s Tudum: ‘At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be.

‘The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going.’

With the third season having already been produced in New Zealand, the next adventure will follow Gus, Jepperd, Wendy (Naledi Murray) and Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen) after they’ve set out for Alaska.

‘[It’s] another road trip story like season one, but in a very different way,’ Jim outlined.

Several viewers expressed how grateful they are that Sweet Tooth will get a well-thought-out ending (Picture: Courtesy of Netflix)

‘Season three is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in season one or two.’

Several fans of Sweet Tooth expressed their sadness over it coming to an end, while also feeling grateful that it’ll have a chance to have its conclusion told.

‘I love this show so much, it will be sad to say goodbye, but at least we will get an ending,’ one person tweeted.

‘Last season? I would have loved to see Gus having more adventure with Big Man. 😢,’ another forlorn viewer wrote.
