Tekken 8 launch sells more than twice Street Fighter 6 in UK charts

Tekken 8 has debuted at the top of the UK physical charts, easily outpacing Street Fighter 6 as it does so.

It seems Tekken 8 has had a highly successful launch in the UK, with the fighting game sequel landing at the top of the UK physical charts and easily beating Street Fighter 6 during its launch last June.

Bandai Namco’s sequel, which launched last Friday on PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X, beat fellow new entry Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth to the top. Last week’s number one, Hogwarts Legacy, dropped to seventh place.

Tekken 8’s UK physical sales are more than double Street Fighter 6’s physical launch figures, which given there’s no reason to think there’d be any proportional difference in their digital sales, suggests that Tekken has drawn first blood against its long-time rival.

Street Fighter 6 has sold very well since it launched in June last year. Capcom recently announced it has sold over three million copies worldwide, as of January 3, 2024 – Street Fighter 5 has sold 7.4 million copies since 2016, for comparison.

So it’s not that Street Fighter 6 did badly, quite the opposite, but that Tekken 8 seems to have got off to an exceptionally good start.

Capcom’s sequel was also pulling in some impressive numbers digitally when it launched on Steam, outperforming Mortal Kombat 11.

While Street Fighter 6 didn’t perform as well physically at launch, compared to digital, it also released at a more crowded time – with The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom beating it to the number one spot back in June.

Elsewhere in the UK physical chart this week, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has moved up to number three, followed by EA Sports FC 24 in fourth and Super Mario Bros. Wonder in fifth.

Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth appears to be selling well on digital platforms too. According to SteamDB, the role-playing sequel achieved the highest peak player count in the series’ history on Steam, hitting 46,161 players over the weekend.

Tekken 8 was only a little ahead, with an all-time peak of 49,977, which may suggest overall sales between the two were close across the board. Street Fighter 6’s all-time peak on Steam was 70,573 concurrent players eight months ago.
