‘That Was Hilarious’: The Story Behind Patrick Mahomes’ Viral Raiders Fake-Out

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes #15 of the Kansas City Chiefs in action during the game between Las Vegas Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on October 19, 2025

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has built a career on keeping defenses guessing — but during the team’s 31-0 rout of the Las Vegas Raiders, he also had the announcers fooled. A fourth-and-1 snap early in the second quarter turned into one of the most talked-about moments of the game, thanks to a perfectly timed verbal fake-out that left CBS analyst Tony Romo apologizing for Mahomes’ on-field language and the Raiders’ defense stunned.

Patrick Mahomes’ Trick Play Leaves Everyone Laughing

Kansas City Chiefs center Creed Humphrey had the best seat in the house for the now-viral moment. Lined up on fourth-and-1 at their own 40-yard line, Mahomes called out, “Blue 80, set, hut, hut, hut,” hoping to draw the Raiders offside. When that didn’t work, he moved to phase two.

“This (expletive) never (expletive) works, man!” Mahomes yelled — loud enough for CBS microphones to pick up, prompting Romo to quickly apologize on air. Humphrey tried not to laugh, but it wasn’t easy.

“I kind of chuckled when he said it,” Humphrey admitted after the game. “That was hilarious.”

Mahomes sold the act, throwing his hands up and pretending to argue with coaches on the sideline as if frustrated with the play call. Seconds later, he caught the defense off guard by actually snapping the ball, handing it off to Kareem Hunt for a short conversion that kept the drive alive.

Inside the Chiefs’ ‘Hollywood’ Moment

After the game, Mahomes grinned when asked about his acting chops. “I think it comes from all my State Farm commercials,” he joked.

The playful moment was part of what Coach Andy Reid describes as the Chiefs “having fun again.” The offense scored touchdowns on each of its first four drives, welcoming back Rashee Rice after a six-game suspension and reminding fans of the team’s most creative, dynamic eras.

It wasn’t the first time Kansas City got inventive against the Raiders. Fans still remember the “Snow Globe” play — the team’s pre-snap “Ring Around the Rosie” routine — from two years ago. Reid often tells players to let their personalities shine through the playbook, and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy reportedly worked the new trick play into the game plan.

Mahomes even revealed he’d borrowed the fake-out idea from another player. “I can’t remember who I watched do it a couple years ago,” he said. “They said that [on the field], and I was like, ‘I’m gonna use that as part of my acting to try to get the defense to relax a little bit.’”

The gamble paid off — and even the CBS broadcast crew fell for it. “He was faking it!” Romo exclaimed. “He got ya!”
