The 12 Craziest Met Gala Outfits Ever

The Met Gala 2025, is set to be held tonight, Monday, May 5, 2025, to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with dozens of stars prepped to hit the red carpet in show-stopping custom fashions. Celebrities will show off designs inspired by the Met Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” at tonight’s event. 

With stars like Zendaya, Rhianna, Colman Domingo and Doechii set to make an appearance, the typical questions are rearing their heads – Who will be best dressed? Who will nail the theme? And who will wear the craziest outfit of the night?

Sarah Jessica Parker Dons Headpiece Featuring Full Nativity Scene

“Sex in the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker appeared as a guest at the 2018 Met Gala wearing a custom Dolce & Gabbanna gown. The gilded floor-length dress featured a lengthy train as well as an ornate gold headpiece that contained an entire nativity scene. The outfit’s religious undertones were a perfect fit for the event’s theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”

Katy Perry Descends From the Heavens in Angelic Ensemble

Also in attendance at the 2018 Met Gala was pop-star Katy Perry. Dressed by Versace for the religion-themed event, Perry appeared in a gold dress topped off with massive, glitter-topped angel wings and matching thigh high boots.

The 2019 Met Gala was centered around the theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion” inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’.” The theme generated plenty of over-the-top looks, including one from “Tron: Ares” star Jared Leto. The actor and musician appeared on the red carpet in a silky red gown designed by Gucci. Complete with shoulder pads, the outfit similarly featured a jewel encrusted body chain and, most shockingly, a cast of Leto’s own head!

As she walked the carpet, her designer, Brandon Maxwell, helped Gaga strip down to reveal an additional three outfits hidden beneath the first, including a corseted black gown with opera gloves and a bright pink column dress with jewels from Tiffany & Co before revealing a crystal-studded bra and panties as the final layer.

The three-dimensional gown was titled “The Melting Flower of Time,” a perfect fit for the gala’s theme, “Garden of Time,” inspired by the Costume Institute’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition. Kaling similarly attended the Met Gala on-screen in the 2018 film “Ocean’s 8” alongside Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, and Rhianna.

The off-the-shoulder gown featured a matching black headwrap, a sweeping train, and turquoise jewelry designed by Kamyen.
