‘The Gilded Age’ Cast Tease What’s Next After Bertha and George’s Blowout

The Gilded Age Season 3 stars Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector

Romance, resentment, and rising tension are dominating season 3 of “The Gilded Age,” and episode 5 may have delivered the most emotionally explosive hour yet. From George and Bertha Russell’s unraveling marriage to Larry’s surprising proposal to Marian Brook, the stakes for love—and power—have never been higher. Now, stars Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon, and Harry Richardson are sharing new insight into where these fractured relationships are headed.

George and Bertha’s Relationship Is on the Brink On ‘The Gilded Age’

George Russell (Spector) has hit a breaking point. Still reeling from daughter Gladys’ unhappy new life in England, George lashes out at wife Bertha (Coon), warning her not to expect him home when she returns from her mission to “fix” things overseas.

“He just doesn’t feel like they can talk about it,” Spector told TV Insider, explaining that George’s growing sense of powerlessness is fueling his anger. “Clay, for instance, who he sort of banishes from his life, it’s Clay’s lack of confidence in George’s judgment… and that’s precisely what’s at issue between George and Bertha.”

Bertha, meanwhile, is fighting to maintain control—but losing more than she realizes. “To be fair, George isn’t operating at full disclosure,” Coon said. “She doesn’t know exactly the stakes that he’s dealing with because he’s not really telling her.”

Despite the friction, Coon teased that George and Bertha’s marriage isn’t over just yet. “The train hasn’t left the station,” she said. “But the cost of success for Bertha—especially when it comes to Gladys—has been great.”

Larry and Marian: A Power Couple in the Making?

While George and Bertha spiral, their son Larry (Richardson) surprised Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) with a tearful proposal—and she said yes. But the romantic high didn’t last long. Larry quickly revealed he’d be leaving for Arizona the next day, without even a celebratory dinner.

“He’s very attracted to the fact that she speaks up for herself and she does her own thing,” Richardson said. “That’s the thing that he’s trying to do in his life, so he’s very drawn to her.”

Richardson admitted Larry may not realize he’s seeking a partner like his mother but said Marian represents the strength and equality he craves. “He really wants someone to meet him head-on and to be in a harmonious, mature, and respectful communication.”

As for how the rest of the season unfolds? Richardson hinted that the central theme—“Love conquers all, or costs you everything”—applies to every character. “They’re all struggling with what to hold on to,” he said. “They try to have power over each other, but really they’ll only have power when they give it up—when they fall into this heart space.”
