‘The Vampire Diaries’ Universe Could Grow Again—Here’s What the Creators Are Saying

The stars of The Vampire Diaries

Fans of “The Vampire Diaries” are buzzing with excitement over rumors of a potential new spinoff. But, there have been two very different reactions to the unconfirmed project from co-creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec.

Plec has teased ideas for expanding the beloved supernatural universe, but Williamson has shared his surprise and skepticism about revisiting Mystic Falls so soon. Here’s the scoop on the latest spinoff speculation and Williamson’s take on it.

Rumors Swirl Around a New ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Spinoff

The CW’s hit supernatural drama “The Vampire Diaries” ran for eight seasons from 2009 to 2017, and the show captivated audiences with its tale of love, vampires, and Mystic Falls.

The popular series spawned two spinoffs: “The Originals” and “Legacies.” “The Originals” followed the Mikaelson family and ran for five seasons from 2013 to 2018. While “Legacies” explored the next generation at the Salvatore School and ran for four seasons, from 2018 to 2022.

While Williamson co-created the original series with Plec, he was not involved in either spinoff. Now, reports of a third spinoff have surfaced which have been fueled by Plec’s enthusiasm.

“There’s, in my mind, always a road to travel that could be another branch on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ tree. I think that it’s a matter of timing, and the moment, and the idea,” Plec told Deadline last year. “So hopefully the stars will align and someone will do it, hopefully with me. But you never know.”

Co-Creator Kevin Williamson Admits He Was ‘Surprised’ at the Timing

When ScreenRant recently asked about his possible involvement in the potential third spinoff of “The Vampire Diaries,” Williamson was candid and a bit bemused.

“No,” he said, confirming he’s not part of the discussions. “I don’t know what’s up. Go ask them. I was like, ‘Oh.’ I was surprised. I thought it was too soon. I feel like it just – yeah, it just ended. Or maybe it didn’t just end. I guess that was a few years ago.”

Williamson’s reaction seems to indicate that he believes “The Vampire Diaries” universe might need more time before another revival. But even if it was confirmed to be happening, Williamson is too busy focusing on other projects. He is directing “Scream 7,” due to be released in 2026. He has also created Netflix’s “The Waterfront,” and has “Rear Window” and “The It Girl” in development. He will also be directing “The Game.”

‘The Vampire Diaries’ Universe is Still Full of Potential

While Plec dreams of new stories for “The Vampire Diaries,” Williamson seems content to let others steer the franchise’s future. In September 2023, Plec admitted that she texted Paul Wesley after seeing news about the “Twilight” animated show.

“He’s like, ‘Why aren’t we doing this?’ And I said, ‘Good question. We should do this,” Plec revealed.

She has made it clear that she “100 percent” has a story that she still wants to tell, and “the people who are in the book have a story that they still want to tell.”

“So, the hope is they’ll give me the opportunity to do it again. So, we’ll see,” Plec said.

Despite the buzz, a third spinoff has not been officially confirmed. And content changes at The CW make a return to the network unlikely.

“The Vampire Diaries” is streaming on Max.
