A contestant on The Wheel has broken down in tears after walking away with £110,000.
The game show, hosted by comedian Michael McIntyre, returned to screens tonight.
On hand to help everyday people answer a series of trivia questions were celebrities Roman Kemp, Katherine Ryan, Jill Scott, Joe Marler, Susan Wokoma, Layton Williams, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith.
After the prize pool was built up to £55,000, Sally from Gateshead was given the chance to choose the famous face to help her – and double the money.
If she selected Joe – who was the celebrity to answer the least amount of questions correctly – the money would double, a risk she decided to take.
With no hesitation, she singled out the retired rugby player, who is also currently appearing on Celebrity Traitors.
However, he was somewhat terrified about the responsibility, declaring: ‘I don’t want to do this. I feel sick!’
But amping Joe up, Sally got him excited enough to give it a crack.
When first introduced in the episode Sally, a lollipop lady, spoke about her dreams to buy a van.
‘My partner Mark and I have a dream of buying a van to convert into a campervan. We’ve got all the equipment, but we are missing a vital component – which is the van,’ she shared.
‘My spare bedroom is just full, so we need the van.’
She then explained: ‘And if there was a little bit left over, five years ago I was diagnosed with lung cancer, and my friends were absolutely amazing and were with me every step of the way.’
‘I also got the all-clear in March! So, I would love to treat them and pay them back.’
In the final part of the show Sally was presented with three categories – vitamins, martial arts, and the beach – the final question ended up on martial arts.
It was: ‘The Welsh athlete Jade Jones has won two Olympic gold medals in which martial art? Kickboxing, Judo, Taekwondo or Karate.’
With 30 seconds to discuss, Sally immediately said she thought the answer was judo or taekwondo as she recalled seeing images of ‘a girl winning medals kicking’.
Locking in the latter, the nerves started to take hold of Sally who said: ‘That can’t be right. This is ridiculous, isn’t it. It’s not it. It’s judo.’
However, it was then revealed she was correct – and had won one of the biggest prizes ever in six seasons of the series.
Jumping up and screaming, Sally started running around hugging the celebrities, who were cheering and clapping. She then broke down into tears, questioning: ‘Did that just happen?’
Rendered speechless at first, she then cried while sharing: ‘We can get our van and go on adventures, and I can treat my friends and thank them.’
‘What a year! The all clear in March and now this! But I’m not going to hang my lollipop though!’
As Michael wrapped up the episode, he told her: ‘Nothing is better than making someone as happy as we’ve made you. Well done.’
‘Absolutely love The Wheel. Well-deserved win Sally,’ Sammy Lou posted on X.
‘So good to have The Wheel back on. Great episode. I’m not crying you are!’ Claire shared.
‘What a lovely lady, and so so, happy for her! Her reaction was brilliant!’ Lisa wrote.
‘Crying tears of happiness for Sally ❤️ What a well-deserved winner ❤️’ Lucie added.
Sally’s win makes her the contestant to have won the second largest amount on the show ever.
In November 2022, Jonathan from Surrey took home £116,000.
The Wheel airs Saturdays at 8.20pm on BBC One.
