CD Projekt is the latest company to make a big reveal in the most boring way imaginable, casually announcing a new DLC expansion for The Witcher 3.
For almost a year now, there has been persistent chatter of The Witcher 3 receiving a new DLC expansion ahead of the launch of the long-awaited sequel, The Witcher 4.
Claims about the DLC have included that it is being developed by developer Fool’s Theory instead of CD Projekt, featuring a whole new region to explore, and that it will launch by the end of this month, but now we know that that last point, at least, is not true.
CD Projekt is planning a livestream tomorrow, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Blood & Wine expansion, which would be the perfect place to announce the new DLC, but CD Projekt has decided to spoil the surprise ahead of time.
Details are slim, but CD Projekt has confirmed a title – Songs Of The Past – and release window of 2027. On top of that, the DLC is only slated for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, so last gen players will be forced to upgrade if they want to play it.
The claims of the DLC being in the works at Fool’s Theory were half-correct as both it and CD Projekt are working together on the expansion. As a reminder, Fool’s Theory is a separate Polish studio comprised of former CD Projekt staff, which is also helming a full remake of the very first Witcher game.

As for the story, that’s still being kept under wraps. All the announcement says is that series protagonist, Geralt, will be the star, but that was to be expected.
It’s been suggested that The Witcher 3’s new DLC will serve as a bridge connecting to The Witcher 4, which sees Geralt’s adopted daughter Ciri take over as the new protagonist.
So, Songs Of The Past could double as a swansong for Geralt, letting fans experience one last adventure with him ahead of The Witcher 4. The new game lacks a release date but could launch as early as 2027 – although it’s probably more likely to be 2028.
CD Projekt will hopefully talk about the new DLC during the upcoming livestream, which airs on YouTube and Twitch at 4pm BST tomorrow on Thursday, May 28.
However, the company has said it won’t be sharing further details until late summer. That’s long after Summer Game Fest, which takes place next week, so it’d be shocking if CD Projekt didn’t even have a teaser trailer this week to drum up hype.
This is further proof that the games industry at large has lost its sense of showmanship, as companies are content to drop big reveals like this in the least exciting way possible.
Just last week, for instance, Warhorse Studios announced a brand-new Lord Of The Rings themed open world roleplaying game with nothing but a social media post.
