Sandra Hüller, who is set to star opposite Tom Cruise in his next major motion picture, Digger, has teased the film as the most impressive she’s ever seen.
Digger is still veiled largely in mystery, but it comes from acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Its first trailer heightened anticipation when Cruise shared it with the room at CinemaCon in April, revealing it had taken him 40 years to play a part like he does here – reportedly an insane, cat-loving, and beer-bellied billionaire.
There has already been Oscar talk – and now Hüller has added to the excitement.
‘I am nearly bursting and wanting to talk about this movie,’ the actress said at Cannes Film Festival on Friday as part of a live recording of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, attended by Metro.
‘But I can’t – legally, I can’t,’ she joked – before relenting slightly and giving a tease.
‘I can say that I saw a version that’s maybe not the final version – and that it impresses me beyond anything I’ve ever seen. And that’s all I can say… It’s really, I think it’s going to be a remarkable film.’
Given the trajectory that Hüller has enjoyed in recent years, this praise sounds especially exciting.
The German star, 48, broke through on the international stage in 2023 with back-to-back awards darlings Anatomy of A Fall and The Zone of Interest, both of which premiered at Cannes and made history as Oscar nominees for best picture – the first time two non-English language films made the cut.
Hüller herself was nominated for best actress for Anatomy of a Fall while picking up a double Bafta nomination – one in each acting category for both movies.
And her 2026 could already see that pale in comparison.
After picking up the best leading performance gong at Berlinale in February for historical drama Rose, she is currently the toast of Cannes with new film Fatherland.

In it, she plays Erika, the daughter of famous writer Thomas Mann, accompanying him on a road trip around Germany in 1949 – and it’s already being talked about as the film to beat for the prestigious Palme d’Or.
And let’s not forget that between those two, she appeared opposite Ryan Gosling in blockbuster sci-fi Project Hail Mary and gave us a karaoke scene destined for film compilation clip history.
Alongside stellar reviews, it’s currently the second-highest-grossing film of the year.
So for Digger to top all that? It’s a tantalising prospect.
