Tom Hanks got an unexpected blast from the past while attending a baseball game in New York â and fans of âCast Awayâ couldnât get enough of the nostalgic moment.
The Oscar-winning actor, 69, was surprised by a familiar face while attending the New York Mets game against the New York Yankees on Saturday, May 16.
Hanks Had a Fun Moment With Mr. Met
During the game, Mets mascot Mr. Met made a memorable appearance dressed up as Wilson, the iconic volleyball companion from Hanksâ 2000 survival drama âCast Away.â
In a video later shared by SNYTV on Instagram, Hanks could be seen sitting in the crowd wearing Mets gear when Mr. Met suddenly approached him sporting a hilarious twist on the mascotâs usual look.
Instead of his traditional baseball appearance, Mr. Met had been transformed into Wilson, complete with the famous red handprint across his face â a nod to the makeshift companion Hanksâ character creates in the film.
Hanks immediately recognized the tribute and embraced the joke.
After shaking hands with the mascot, the actor enthusiastically shouted, âWilson!â â echoing one of the most unforgettable moments from âCast Away.â
The pair appeared to have fun with the bit, as Mr. Met later pulled out a notebook labeled âBaseballâ while Hanks jokingly appeared to offer game-day pointers.
Fans Couldnât Get Enough
The playful exchange quickly delighted baseball fans and movie lovers alike.
Many viewers rushed to social media to celebrate the moment, with countless fans simply posting âWILSONâ in the comments alongside GIFs and references from the beloved film.
âI LOVE IT AND WHEN TOMS IN THE ð ,â one fan wrote.
Another praised the actor for enjoying the game among regular fans instead of watching from a luxury suite.
âLove how heâs down in the seats not a box and has a old school scorebook tallying the pitches and every ab like the old days,â the person commented. âYes many do this but not many celebrities letâs be honest.â
Released in 2000 and directed by Robert Zemeckis, âCast Awayâ follows FedEx troubleshooter Chuck Noland, played by Hanks, after a plane crash leaves him stranded on a deserted island in the South Pacific.
During his isolation, Chuck creates an unlikely friendship with a volleyball after accidentally smearing blood across it and naming it Wilson.
The volleyball eventually became one of the most memorable symbols in movie history, especially after an emotional scene in which Wilson drifts away into the ocean during a storm, leaving Chuck devastated.
This is not the first time Hanks has revisited the beloved prop.
Back in 2022, the actor held a blood-streaked volleyball overhead while throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at a Cleveland Guardians vs. San Francisco Giants game.
In a 2024 interview with Reel Blend, Hanks reflected on how Wilson unexpectedly became central to the story.
âWe had a different sort of screenplay in that Chuck Noland spoke all the time,â he explained.
After arriving on the island, however, Hanks and director Zemeckis realized something was missing.
âAnd Bob said, âYou know, thatâd be great because youâre not really going to have any lines until Wilson shows up,ââ Hanks recalled. âI said, âPerfect.ââ
