The remake of Lara Croft’s original Tomb Raider game looks set to be delayed, as uncertainty hangs over developer Crystal Dynamics.

Seven years after the last mainline instalment, in 2018’s Shadow Of The Tomb Raider, a double reveal at The Game Awards 2025 finally gave fans a reason to be excited about the franchise again.

Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis, a remake of the 1996 original, and a brand new entry titled Tomb Raider: Catalyst, were both announced at last year’s awards. The former was slated for 2026, while the latter was scheduled to follow in 2027.

However, an insider claims Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis will no longer arrive this year and will miss the series’ 30th anniversary in October.

This comes from Tomb Raider fan account Society of Raiders on X, who claims the remake will now be released in February 2027. The same account leaked the game’s announcement last year, so while this new info is worth taking with a pinch of salt, they have been accurate in the past.

Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis was only given a broad ‘2026’ release window in its first trailer, so it was likely planned for the second half of the year. However, with GTA 6 set for November 19, this rumoured delay might be to avoid Rockstar’s blast zone.

It might also be a sign of struggles at developer Crystal Dynamics. The studio has been hit with repeated layoffs over the past three years, following its acquisition by Embracer Group in 2022. The studio laid off 20 employees just last month, which comes after cuts in August 2025, March 2025, and September 2023.

Beyond Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics were recently rumoured to be working on an unannounced Lord Of The Rings project to rival Hogwarts Legacy, alongside new studio called Revenge. If true, that means the team is juggling work on three titles simultaneously, which feels like a lot considering all the layoffs over recent years.

If the remake is delayed to 2027, it’s unclear if this will push back Tomb Raider: Catalyst to 2028 as a result, but Lara Croft aficionados might have a longer wait than expected for her grand return.
