The first trailer for Toy Story 5 has been released, and fans are convinced that the new storyline about technology is going to be tricky for parents.
‘The age of toys is over…?’ read the tagline for the brand new teaser trailer released on November 11.
The first teaser introduced viewers to the new character Lilypad, a high-tech frog-shaped smart tablet voiced by Greta Lee (best known for Past Lives and Tron: Ares).
The trailer showed a toy arriving in a package for Bonnie, with all of the existing toys looking in shock at the green tablet toy after it was opened.
The teaser sets up technology as the ‘new threat to playtime’, which fans think is going to be a challenge for parents with screen-using children.
‘The iPad baby storyline is about to wreak havoc on some parents,’ said Asoiaf_266AC on X.
On Reddit, fans were unsure about how the ‘complex topic’ when it comes to kids and tech will be covered by Pixar.
‘Admittedly the “kids these days want iPads, not toys” story is pretty well trodden ground by this point, but I am pretty interested to see how Toy Story would handle it.
‘They’ve usually handled their themes and messages really well, and kids’ screen usage is becoming an increasingly complex topic,’ said AllTheReservations.
‘Yes, it is unnecessary yet again, but the concept of toys vs electronics sounds like it could be resonating to those who both played with toys as kids/grew up with the original films and are now glued to their phones, and iPads. I trust Andrew Stanton with whatever he’s gonna whip up,’ said nicolasb51942003.
‘The villain being an iPad showing us how kids these days prefer that over toys is so smart,’ argued lalisatto on X.
‘Maybe this won’t be too bad… kids nowadays need to be taught about not being on devices for a long period of time,’ said silly_sophie08 on X.
Others argued the story was a few years too late. ‘Cool but this plot is literally 10 years too late. this should’ve been the main plot of the third movie,’ said imleeyo.
Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack are set to lead the cast again as Woody, Buzz, and Jessie, respectively.
The Disney movie franchise is set to span over 30 years with the fifth movie set to arrive in the summer of 2026.
The first film was released in 1995, with the second released three years later in 1999. The third film arrived 15 years after the first, with fans waiting almost a decade for the fourth film in 2019.
The 2019 film focused on Woody and Buzz as they take a road trip with their new child, Bonnie. While on the trip, Woody was reunited with his former flame, Bo Peep, and must decide where his loyalties lie. The film concluded with Woody leaving Bonnie to help abandoned toys find owners, with his true love, Bo Peep.
The fourth film grossed $1.074 billion worldwide, and was nominated for two awards at the 92nd Academy Awards.
Toy Story 5 is set to hit cinemas on June 19.
