Triangle puzzle on The 1% Club loses contestants £95,000 — can you get it right?

Since it burst on to screens in 2022, The 1% Club has become one of the most popular game shows on TV.

It sees Lee Mack guiding 100 contestants through a string of brain-bending logic puzzles in a bid to win a huge stash of cash, culminating in a final question that only 1% of the population was able to answer correctly.

Its popularity means that, even without new episodes, it continues to air, with repeats from the first five series currently showing on Saturday nights, as well as on ITV2 throughout the week, to give viewers another shot at cracking show’s more complicated questions.

Such as this one, from 2024, which recently resurfaced on ITV once again.

The 1% question — which aired in episode 8 of series 4 — saw £95,000 at stake, and remaining contestants Christopher and Scott aiming to win it.

The pair were faced with an image of shapes inside a larger triangle, with the question being: ‘How many triangles are there in this picture?’

And we admit that it’s a lot trickier than it looks because while some of the triangles within the image are obvious, there are others which aren’t quite so noticeable at first glance. Especially when you’re only given 30 seconds to solve it.

Ultimately, it floored the remaining two contestants.

So what was the answer? Well, Lee subsequently revealed that it was 18, with many variations of triangles created by merging different shapes within the main structure.

Yep, it’s complicated — so perhaps it wasn’t too surprising that the contestants struggled with this one considering the time limit and what was at stake.

In the end Christopher guessed the answer to be eight, later admitting to the host: ‘I clearly didn’t count all the triangles.’

Fellow contestant Scott, meanwhile, was just a shade off the correct answer with a guess of 19.

When asked what had happened, he confessed: ‘I started counting, and then I just kept counting the same triangles over and over and over again.’

Still, it’s not the first time a question has floored the participants, with one that aired on the show in February leaving 22 of the 100 participants stumped.

The question, at the 50% level, was as follows: ‘If TRUE is 1234 and LOVE is 7654, what bird is 5371324?’

The answer is VULTURE. Given each of the numbers in the puzzle represented the letters in the words ‘true’ and ‘love’, all players had to do was work out which letter was represented by which number in the longer word to reveal the bird.

Lee Mack explained: ‘If you replace the numbers with the appropriate letters in the question, you get ‘VULTURE’.

While the question only knocked two contestants out of the show, it did force 20 to use their free pass, allowing them to skip one question and remain in the game.
