TV fans have been left in shock after a trailer for the remake of ‘one of the greatest films ever made’ was released.

Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) and Paul Bettany (WandaVision) will go head to head in Sky Original’s new series Amadeus, which recounts the famous music rivalry between Mozart and Salieri.

The 1984 film of the same name directed by Miloš Forman won eight Academy Awards (including best picture and best director), four Baftas and four Golden Globes.

Adapted by Peter Shaffer from his 1979 stage play, it also starred Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham, who won the Oscar for best actor.

Now, however, following Sky’s release of a trailer for a new five-part series based on the same story, fans have taken to social media to share their views.

Responding to Bettany’s Instagram post announcing the new trailer, @jhyde97 wrote: ‘I CAN’T WAIT!!! This looks amazing!’

Similarly, @roonero said: ‘Oh my gosh I cannot WAIT,’ as @witchart added: ‘Yesssss Will Sharpe in everything, always.’

However, taking to X, many fans felt angered by the announcement, given the success of the original movie.

@fizznickler questioned: ‘Why? The original was perfect,’ as @ValliantRenegad wrote: ‘Wait what!? WHY??? Oh good lord… Stop remaking things that were already PERFECT.’

@aaronpalmer also argued: ‘Lol they really ended that trailer with ‘believe, in original stories??” Really?? After remaking perhaps the one movie that never, ever, needs to remade??’

@taporroJ113 similarly claimed: ‘I saw this movie 35 years ago, it was perfect.’

Meanwhile, @sybaris_rex added: ‘Why though? I can tell just by this preview that the original is far better. It, itself, was a masterpiece.

‘This is just furthering the copy & paste mentality of new media lacking in original ideas.’

Written by Penned by Joe Barton, who is known for his work on Black Doves, an official synopsis for the Sky series reads: ‘Hero of his own story but villain to history, Salieri’s envy turns vengeful as he uses any means necessary to thwart Mozart and protect his position in the establishment.’

How many Amadeus adaptations have there been?

  • Alexander Pushkin’s original play ‘Mozart and Salieri’ was released in 1830.
  • Inspired by Pushkin’s story, Peter Shaffer adapted it into his 1979 stage play ‘Amadeus’.
  • Shaffer than adapted his play into the 1984 film ‘Amadeus’, directed by Miloš Forman.
  • Sky Original have now made a five-part series also titled ‘Amadeus’.

The show also stars Gabrielle Creevy (In My Skin, Black Doves) as Mozart’s wife.

The five-part series, which charts the meteoric rise and mythic downfall of Mozart and his destructive rivalry with Salieri, is set to launch on Sky in December.

Amadeus will be available to watch on Sky and NOW in December.
