A fantasy drama series that has remained hugely popular with fans is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
It’s full of magic and based on the legend of King Arthur, making it a wonderful period watch that straddles different genres.
Colin Morgan stars as the titular lead and Bradley James plays the king in the series sat in the fantastical land of Camelot.
We are, of course, talking about the iconic BBC series, Merlin.
The show came out in 2008 and ran for five seasons until 2012. Now, almost 20 years later, and Amazon’s streaming service has added it to their roster of shows.
@kaeaddeson76001 reacted to the news on X: ‘Everyone should watch Merlin on Amazon because it’s amazing.’
They’re not the only one to rate it highly – the show scores an impressive 87% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and 85% with critics on the site.
Describing how the show subverts usual interpretations of the historical legend, producer Julian Murphy explained that he and Johnny Capps ‘began imagining an Camelot that existed before its golden age.’
Julian went on: ‘Camelot is a land where magic is banned. Merlin, rather than being an unbelievably old and wise wizard is a young boy who works as Arthur’s manservant and has to hide his abilities. He saves Arthur on a regular basis but always has to keep his magic a secret.’
Fans of the show on IMDb speak very highly of the concept, with a few saying they ‘can’t get over’ the series.
Cecilyeb was one, and wrote a poetic review: ‘Oh Merlin. Four years since I finished my last re-watch and you’re still breaking my heart.
‘You are quite terrible in many ways, with some of the cheesiest special effects I’ve ever seen on television, and some of the cheesiest writing as well, but your story captured my imagination like no Game of Thrones has done.’
Meriamrhallab-63404 admitted they’re still going back to it: ‘I’ve watched this series about 4 times, I just don’t know what it is about it. It feels like home.’
And Katechunz said they ‘watched the five seasons in two weeks’ leaving them ‘completely hooked.’
As well as starring Colin and Bradley, Merlin’s cast is made up of some impressive names including One Foot in the Grave’s Richard Wilson, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Anthony Head.
Merlin is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer.
