Vanessa Redgrave, 88, doesn’t step out for that many industry events these days, which is why it was so exciting to see the iconic actress show up to the 43rd Torino Film Festival in Italy on Tuesday, November 25.
The star “received the Stella della Mole Award for her contributions to the art of cinema over the course of her life,” according to Parade. Beyond that, Variety noted that “the Oscar-winning British actress [was there to] present the world premiere of her latest film ‘The Estate.’”
Wearing a loose, light-colored pantsuit and a matching scarf, the actress looked lovely as she “stood between her husband, fellow actor Franco Nero, and their son, Carlo Gabriel Nero, while Torino artistic director Giulio Base stood on her husbandâs other side,” per Parade.
Vanessa Is a ‘Legend’
Before the event, Torino artistic director Giulio Base opened up about the star and noted her impressive status.
âWhen you are nominated for an Oscar six times, youâre no longer just one of the worldâs greatest actresses: you become a legend,â he said in a statement (via Variety).
“After making her screen debut at age 21 in the forgettable medical thriller ‘Behind the Mask’ (her father, Michael Redgrave, was the filmâs lead), Redgrave went on to collect virtually every acting honor available, including an Oscar for best supporting actress (for ‘Julia’ in 1978), a Golden Globe, the Emmy, the Tony, the BAFTA and awards in Venice and Cannes,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Base also pointed out that while âVanessa Redgrave is an icon of theater and cinema,” she is “also a committed activist.â
The Star Has ‘a New Take on Life’
Back in September 2015, The Standard noted, “In April, the actress Vanessa Redgrave, 78, had a heart attack and nearly died. Few people seem to know about this â she gathered her family about her, and ‘closed ranks while she recovered’ â and yet it was an event with such profound implications that she finds herself looking at the world now in entirely new ways.”
âI have a new understanding, a new take on life,â she said in the deep voice she’s known for and was cause by the smoking that also led to her heart attack.
âI thought I appreciated everything pretty well,” she added. “That I cared about my profession, my family, the seasons, nature, flowers, science, art. All of it. But compared to how I notice and appreciate things now? Before this, I didnât care at all. Now I find myself thinking what a miracle it all is.â
