Victoria Beckham Bravely Opens up About Past Bullying & How It Made Her Stronger

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham revealed that she had been bullied as a kid in her eponymous Netflix docuseries, and she opened up more about her traumatic past.

In an October 22 interview on “Call Her Daddy,” she recalled, “I didn’t fit in socially, because when all the other kids after school were smoking and hanging out, I was going to dancing lessons or I was going to drama lessons.”

Beckham shared that she also felt awkward because of her acne and bad hair, and told the host Alex Cooper that kids would throw soda cans at her.

“I just internalized all of that, and it just made me more and more shy,” the former Spice Girl said.

Despite having supportive parents, Beckham kept the bullying to herself. “I suppose I was ashamed, embarrassed. So I didn’t tell anybody,” she stated.

As an adult, Beckham learned to use the hurtful experience and told Cooper, “It gave me a thick skin because that bullying continued when I went to college.”

She continued, “I was told I was too fat to even be on the stage, and that gave me a thick skin, I suppose, for what I was going to get next, which was a very much public bullying from the media.”

After enduring a harsh school life, Beckham’s dreams of performing on stage came true when she became a member of the Spice Girls.

On “Call Her Daddy,” the former pop star said, “I wanted to be the popular girl at school, and I was not. I was that kid that was bullied and beaten up, and I dreamt of being that popular girl.”

“Overnight, I was, and I was doing it with my four best friends,” she said, referring to Mel B, Mel C, Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell.

Beckham added, “It was everything that I dreamed of. And everything changed for my family … and it was fast.”

The Spice Girls Made Beckham Feel Loved

Beckham reconnected with all the members of the Spice Girls during their reunion tour in 2007 and 2008, and she told Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM show on October 20 how much she appreciated her bandmates.

“That was the moment when I realized that I loved the girls. And I wouldn’t be me if I hadn’t been with the girls. The girls made me realize I was enough,” she said.

“Before I was in the Spice Girls, I was so self-conscious. And they made me feel that I was good enough,” Beckham shared.
