Renowned actor Anthony Hopkins has achieved plenty of impressive milestones over the years. Now, he’s sharing an especially meaningful one before his 88th birthday. On December 29, 2025, the star took to Instagram to commemorate 50 years of sobriety.
“Without bragging, I got help, and 50 years ago today was the end,” he said in the Reel. He also shared a valuable piece of advice regarding sobriety. “Choose life instead of the opposite,” he urged fans. “Life, life, life, and more life.” The actor celebrates his birthday on December 31st, making this a very special week for him overall. At the end of the video, he wished viewers “Happy New Year and happy life!”
Hopkins had an Epiphany about his Drinking in 1975
As Hopkins explained in the Reel, drinking nearly cost him his life at the height of his struggles with alcoholism. In October 2025, he shared more details about the epiphany moment he had back in 1975. As Radar Online reported, Hopkins described a crucial moment during a podcast appearance. “I was drunk and driving my car here in California in a blackout, no clue where I was going, when I realized that I could have killed somebody â or myself,” he shared. This realization helped set him on the path to sobriety.
Hopkins also revealed that he heard a voice telling him it was time to change his life. “The craving to drink was taken from me, or left,” he said of the experience. “Now I don’t have any theories except divinity or that power that we all possess inside us that creates us from birth, life force, whatever it is.”
Posting on social media in honor of his sobriety isn’t new for Hopkins, who shared a similar video in December 2024. “Well, 49 years ago today, I stopped [drinking],” he said in the video. He again told the story of December 29, 1975, and what he did after realizing he needed help with his drinking problem. “I phoned up a group of people like me â alcoholics,” he said. “And that was it. Sober. I’ve had more fun these 49 years than ever.”
The Actor Published a Memoir in 2025
In late 2025, Hopkins published a memoir called “We Did OK, Kid,” which reflects on his struggles and triumphs over the years. The memoir delves further into his sobriety journey, and also illuminates his challenging childhood and the success he has found in Hollywood.
In an interview with BBC News, Hopkins revealed one of the major things he’s learned across his life and incredible career, and his words are an excellent mantra for anyone to follow. “Enjoy it now before it’s too late,” he said of his approach to life now. “Just enjoy it as much as you can.”
