Milan Fashion Week delivered a full-circle fashion moment when Meryl Streep, in character as Miranda Priestly, greeted Vogue icon Anna Wintour â the real-life inspiration behind her âDevil Wears Pradaâ role.
On Sept. 27, Streep reportedly attended Dolce & Gabbanaâs Spring/Summer 2026 show in Milan while filming the highly anticipated sequel. She sat front row alongside costar Stanley Tucci, reprising his role as art director Nigel Kipling, and newcomer Simone Ashley. Streep, dressed in a latex camel trench coat with leopard-print accessories, greeted Wintour backstage. The two hugged and chatted warmly, a moment captured in a video posted by Vogue, where Streep even joked, âThis is my first fashion show.â
The fashionable encounter came as filming for âThe Devil Wears Prada 2â ramps up. The sequel, set to release May 1, 2026, reunites much of the original cast â including Streep, Tucci, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt â while introducing new faces like Ashley, Lucy Liu, and Justin Theroux.
Anna Wintourâs Cameo Rumors Addressed
Wintourâs appearance with Streep and Tucci immediately sparked speculation that she might appear in the film. However, Entertainment Weekly confirmed she will not have a cameo in the sequel despite the long-rumored possibility.
According to EW, Wintourâs Milan meeting with the cast was separate from filming, though it still fueled excitement. A faux Vogue article tied to the Milan shoot described Miranda Priestlyâs âsurprise appearanceâ at the show with Nigel Kipling and a âmystery new hire,â confirming Ashleyâs new role. The storyline will reportedly follow Priestly as she returns to the fashion frontlines after stepping away from the spotlight.
Though she wonât be seen onscreen, Wintourâs influence remains central. Lauren Weisbergerâs 2003 novel, the basis for the 2006 film, was inspired by her time as Wintourâs assistant at Vogue, and the magazine editorâs iconic office was meticulously recreated for the movie. Director David Frankel has said Wintour herself attended the first screening in New York and âshowed she had a great sense of humorâ about the portrayal.
Wintourâs Take on âThe Devil Wears Pradaâ
Despite being the reported inspiration for Miranda Priestly, Wintour has repeatedly expressed her enjoyment of the film. Earlier this month, she told New Yorker editor David Remnick that she saw the portrayal as more of a âcaricatureâ than a true reflection. âI found it highly enjoyable. It was very funny,â she said, adding she often jokes with designer Miuccia Prada about how beneficial the movie was for her brand.
She also praised the cast including Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt, and said the movie gave audiences a fair look at the âhard work that goes into the making of a magazine.â
With Streep and Tucci back in character, Ashley stepping into the spotlight, and Wintourâs presence off-camera reminding fans of the storyâs roots, âThe Devil Wears Prada 2â is shaping up to be one of 2026âs most anticipated films. As Wintour once put it: âIn the end, I thought it was a fair shot.â
