Josh Duhamel is stepping away from Hollywoodâs fast-paced lifestyle. Now, he’s proudly embracing a quieter, more grounded existence in Minnesota. He has happily traded red carpets for rustic cabin life, movie sets for the most perfect lakeside sunsets, and a constant hustle for time with family & nature.
Stepping away from Hollywoodâs fast-paced lifestyle, the 52-year-old actor shared why he left Los Angeles for a life centered on âgetting back to the basics” in an interview with People magazine.
Duhamel Says He Felt a âCallingâ to Get Back to the Basics & Provide for His Family
In a candid chat with People, Duhamel said, âI make movies and TV shows, and I love it, I truly do love it, but I had this calling to go and really do things with my hands again: fix things, make things and just do the basic things that we take for granted”
The “Life as we know it” actor added: âIâm really more of a guy who wants to stay true to my roots, get back to the basics, hone whatever basic skills I need⦠to provide for my family. Thatâs really what itâs about for me.â
How Duhamel Built His âDoomsday Cabinâ
More than a decade ago, Duhamel purchased an empty half-parcel of land about 90 minutes from Fargo, N.D. He slowly constructed a rustic cabin by hand, later expanding the property with additional land.
For years, the off-grid lakeside retreat, which he affectionately calls his âdoomsday cabin,â had no electricity, running water, or modern amenities.
âWeâre at a place now where it feels done. Itâs completely livable now,â says Duhamel, who recently partnered with CarGurus for its new video series, “The Big Deal Show”.
âItâs so back to the basics⦠itâs an opportunity to really enjoy the simple things in life â family, friends, making memories.â
Family Time in the Great Outdoors
Duhamel loves sharing the retreat with wife Audra Mari, their 18-month-old son Shepherd, and his eldest son Axl, whom he shares with ex-wife Fergie. â
Weâre deep in the woods out there, so it is fun,â he says. âThere are bald eagles everywhere, there are otters swimming with their little babies all over the place.â
From spotting bald eagles to enjoying peaceful evenings by the lake, the actor cherishes every chance to connect with nature and spend meaningful time with his loved ones far from Hollywoodâs spotlight.
The Realities of Cabin Life
Naturally, life in the countryside isnât without its challenges. “We are constantly fighting the mice from getting into the cabins. Thatâs a constant man versus nature struggle we deal with,â Duhamel says with a laugh.
Still, the actor sees those challenges as part of the charm. For him, this new chapter is about more than just a change of scenery; itâs about creating a life rooted in peace and lasting family memories.
