Why Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ Legal Team Is Threatening Netflix

Sean Combs: The Reckoning is a new, four-part documentary series arriving on Netflix on Dec. 2, 2025, that takes viewers inside the rise and controversial downfall of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. Executive-produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and directed by Alexandria Stapleton, the series uses never-before-seen footage, testimonials from former associates, and exclusive interviews to trace Combs’ journey from his founding of Bad Boy Entertainment to his 2025 conviction on prostitution-related charges. Most recently, Combs’ lawyers sent Netflix a cease-and-desist letter in light of the documentary. Here’s what they’re threatening.

The docuseries, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, delivers a mix of archival and previously unreleased footage that casts fresh light on Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal downfall. It includes video captured just days before his 2024 arrest. A tense hotel room phone call shows Combs saying, “We are losing,” indicating the pressure swirling around him.

Beyond the footage, the documentary also features exclusive interviews and first-hand accounts from former associates, employees, artists, and other people from within Combs’ orbit. Crucially, the series goes inside the courtroom aftermath. It includes interviews with jurors from his 2025 trial, offering insight into how they reached a controversial verdict.

According to <a href=”https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/01/entertainment/sean-diddy-combs-netflix-50-cent-documentary” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>CNN, Combs’ lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter to Netflix on Dec. 1, 2025 — the night before the release of the series. The mogul’s lawyers are demanding that the streaming giant not release The Reckoning. Combs’ spokesperson said in a statement that the docuseries contains “stolen footage that was never authorized for release” and called the series a “shameful hit piece.”

Combs’ spokesperson, Juda Engelmayer, also noted that neither Combs nor anyone on his legal team was sent a screener of the docuseries ahead of time.

The cease-and-desist letter threatened further legal action if Netflix doesn’t comply.

“As you are undoubtedly aware, Mr. Combs has not hesitated to take legal action against media entities and others who violate his rights, and he will not hesitate to do so against Netflix,” the letter reads.

So, how is Netflix responding to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal threats? When CNN reached out to the streaming giant, they referred to a statement from director Alexandra Stapleton.

“It came to us,” Stapleton said. “We obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights. We moved heaven and earth to keep the filmmaker’s identity confidential. One thing about Sean Combs is that he’s always filming himself, and it’s been an obsession throughout the decades. We also reached out to Sean Combs’ legal team for an interview and comment multiple times, but did not hear back.”

While speaking on Good Morning America on Dec. 1, 2025, Stapleton also commented on the content in Sean Combs: The Reckoning.

“It was very interesting to watch a man who’s known for his brand presence,” Stapleton said. “He has a really amazing knack for marketing and all of that, and how he was sort of taking that into account, and how he was coming off to the public.”

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs previously filed a defamation lawsuit against NBCUniversal

This isn’t the first time that Sean “Diddy” Combs has threatened a streaming service. In February 2025, Combs filed a $100 million defamation lawsuit against NBCUniversal, its streaming service Peacock, and the production company behind the film. The lawsuit centers on the documentary titled Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy, which premiered on Peacock.

Combs’s legal team argues the documentary “falsely, recklessly, and maliciously” presents him as a serial murderer and abuser, including claims of sexual assault of minors and sex trafficking, according to <a href=”https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/nbc-universal-new-york-nbc-christopher-wallace-porter-b2697147.html” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Independent. According to the suit, the claims have no evidence supporting them. Among the allegations the documentary reportedly aired were suggestions that Combs was involved in the deaths of people close to him, including former associates and famous figures, which the lawsuit calls baseless conspiracy theories and an attempt to paint him as a “monster.”
