Why “This Is Us” Star Left LA — and Isn’t Looking Back

Many creatives would give anything to realize their dreams in Hollywood while others recognize that everything is a wave.

Hollywood is a fickle beast. It can be a grueling place to live and the entertainment industry that drives it even moreso. “This Is Us” actress Chrissy Metz took her opportunity after the end of the NBC series to change her life for the better.

Speaking to People Magazine, Metz didn’t waltz around with how she feels about the industry.

Moving Back East

“I was in LA for 21 years, but my family is in Florida, where I’m from,” Metz mentions, telling People she moved to Nashville. “And during the pandemic, I could drive to them from here. It’s just a better quality of life here. Everything is 15 minutes away, and it’s just so much less stress.”

Nashville is more known for music but there are a number of television and film projects throughout the Southeast. And Metz is still acting. More recently, she’ll appear in the Starz show “The Hunting Wives,” which is based on the book of the same name.

Other actors in the show include Malin Akerman, Brittany Snow, and Dermot Mulroney. Filming took place in North Carolina.

Metz was born in Homestead, Florida in Miami-Dade County. Her father was in the Navy, which caused the family to spend some time in Japan where he was stationed. The Metz’s then moved to Gainesville, Florida.

Metz prefers the South to Los Angeles. She loves the atmosphere but, more importantly, she loves the hospitality the South can provide.

“It feels more communal here,” she tells People. “In L.A. it was always like, ‘Oh, you have an audition? What’s it for? Oh, you have an audition? What for?’ It was all very dog eat dog!”

A Metaphysical Relationship

Metz, a mother of two, is currently promoting her new children’s book.

Called “When I Talk To God, I Talk About Feelings,” the book is a faith driven follow up to Metz’s previous book “When I Talk to God, I Talk About You.” She co-wrote the book with Bradley Collins.

This isn’t her first foray into religious works. Metz previously starred in “Breakthrough,” the Christian drama about a teenager who fell underwater through an iced over lake in 2015 before being rescued and resuscitated after 15 minutes.

“Breakthrough” also features Topher Grace, Mike Colter, and Dennis Haysbert.

“I think, unfortunately, faith gets a bad rap because some people think there’s a stigma attached to particular religions,” Metz adds.

“For me, it’s like you can have your own personal relationship with a higher power, and you can call it what you want,” Metz continues. “I choose to call it God. And I know that I wouldn’t be where I’m at without that belief and faith in my life.”

Metz is also an accomplished singer, having recorded and released a multitude of songs for Vevo on YouTube. She also put out a song on the official “Breakthrough” soundtrack.
