World Cup commentator called out after mistaking Pharrell for A$AP Rocky

A BBC commentator has gone viral after mistaking Pharrell Williams for another artist in two different ways.

Last night saw Spain triumph over Argentina at a star-studded World Cup final that saw the likes of Matt Damon and Javier Bardem in attendance.

However, roughly a quarter of the way into the biggest game in football, World Cup commentator Guy Mowbray left viewers in stitches after his hilarious blunder.

As the camera spotted music icon Pharrell in the stands, Mowbray – who was joined by England legend Alan Shearer in the commentary box – originally identified him as ‘AKA Rocky’.

Quickly correcting himself, he then added: ‘I think that is AKA Rocky… or ASAP Rocky, sorry.’

Despite Pharrell wearing a cap and sunglasses, which might have made him slightly tricker to recognise, A$AP Rocky was not there at all.

On social media, it didn’t take long for eagle-eyed viewers to notice the blunder, with plenty taking the opportunity to poke fun at the veteran commentator.

Writing on X, one user called @radtunez said: ‘Commentator really just called Pharrell “A$AP Rocky.” That’s a wild miss.’

Another user called M also wrote: ‘BBC commentator calling Pharrell Williams “I think that’s aka rocky.. or asap rocky” bye.

Meanwhile, @stechu commented: ‘BBC calling Pharrell ASAP Rocky. This World Cup coverage cannot end soon enough.’
