Wynne Evans has spoken about how he landed in hospital after making an attempt on his life in the wake of his contentious exit from Strictly Come Dancing.

The opera singer spoke about the dark time in his life during an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday morning.

The Welshman was sensationally fired earlier after being caught making a sexual remark about It Takes Two host Janette Manrara.

Soon after the incident was made public, Evans issued an apology and said he was ‘deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate action caused’ and would be taking a break from the public eye for ‘self-reflection’ and to ‘prioritise my wellbeing’.

He was then let go from the BBC, who decided not to renew his one-year rolling BBC Radio contract following a four-month investigation.

The 53-year-old detailed his mental health struggles in the ITV studio, speaking to Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid.

Evans said: ‘I went on a dancing show and ended up trying to take my own life.

‘I did end up in hospital. Somebody found me, rang an ambulance, and luckily for me, I’m here today.’

He explained his mental state at the time, telling Madeley and Reid: ‘In your head, you go, “The only way I can make these people stop is by taking my life”.

‘You’re punishing not them, you’re actually punishing yourself and your family.

‘It’s given me a greater understanding of my own mental health and where I am in my life, and how I can help other people who don’t want to talk about mental health.

‘I’m learning from my mistakes but not letting them define me for the rest of my life.’

The incident with Manrara, which occurred during a photo session at Birmingham Arena, was not the first time Evans raised eyebrows during his time on the BBC One show.

During his live 2024 run, the Go Compare star was caught with his wandering hand around pro partner Katya Jones’ waist. Fans noticed an uncomfortable moment in which Jones removed his hand before refusing to high-five him.

The couple later took to Instagram to clarify that it was just a ‘joke’ and insisted nothing had happened between them, after viewers believed they had perceived Jones’ unhappiness in the moment.

A year on from his Strictly debut – and on the night the 2025 famous faces took to the dancefloor – Evans said he wanted to ‘close that chapter of his life’.

Wynne went on to share that he will ‘always have fond memories of Strictly’ and wished the 2025 contestants ‘the best of luck’, especially his former dance partner.

Metro contacted the BBC for comment.
