Xbox’s chief content officer has shared an update on The Elder Scrolls 6, describing the much-anticipated sequel as ‘amazing’.

Despite being announced eight years ago, in 2018, we still have no clear indication of when The Elder Scrolls 6 will actually come out.

Rumours have suggested it could arrive in 2027 or 2028, but its absence at this year’s Xbox Games Showcase implies it could be even further away. Last year, the game’s director, Todd Howard, described it as being ‘still a long way off’.

As fans continue to wait, Xbox chief content officer, Matt Booty, has provided an update on The Elder Scrolls 6, promising that they will ‘reveal it at the right time’.

Asked by Variety about the game’s absence from the Xbox Games Showcase, Booty said: ‘I would say one of the more challenging balancing acts of someone in a job like mine is balancing that you want to go show the world all the cool stuff you’re working on, and you want to get them excited early, but we also know that we want to wait till the right moment.

‘And when you decide to show it, you want it to be the best you’ve got. And also that when you show the game, you’re also giving them a promise of, hey, it’s coming soon.

‘So I can tell you, having visited Bethesda and sat with Todd [Howard] and seen Elder Scrolls playing, it looks amazing, and it’s coming along well. And we’ll make sure to announce it and really reveal it at the right time.’

An Xbox executive describing one of their upcoming titles as ‘amazing’ isn’t the most reliable gauge of a game’s quality, but it’s a reassuring sign that the game does actually exist in some form, somewhere.

Howard has said the majority of people at Bethesda Game Studios are working on The Elder Scrolls 6 right now, but considering the studio is coming off Starfield and we haven’t seen anything from the Skyrim sequel for eight years, there’s not a whole lot to be optimistic about.

The Xbox Games Showcase could have been an opportunity to quell these doubts, but Bethesda barely had any presence at the presentation – except to highlight new updates for Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online.

Along with The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda is working on Fallout 5, but that’s even further away from release. A remaster of Fallout 3 is also rumoured to be in development, in the same vein as The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, but it’s unclear when that will come out – if it even exists.
